Default Has Anyone Imported and Registered any caR From Canadia, eh? Help Needed!

Ok, so this friend of mine ( ) is trying to import a certain import from Canada. NYS DMV says that all they need is a bill of sale, title, and proof of insurance to register it in NY.

However, they cannot tell, me, I mean him ( ) what process is to be had at the US/Canadian border when I, I mean he ( ) brings the car over. Supposedly some type of form is filled out by customs and the car is good to go. This is the problem, seems as though no one aside from the customs agents know what the criteria for this "inspection" is.

For those of you who have CDM cars, do you have any problems with emmisions? Will our sniffer/data readers pick up a CDM caR?

Can someone with experience, preferably a NYer who has been through the process please help.

I dont have any importing experience but I know when I need a Canadian Honda appraised on the car lot it always gets treated like a salvage title car due to it's small diffrences in DOT laws.

Go up there and buy it, bring your NY plates that you are planning on using for it and put them on, drive it accross the border (make sure you have your passport) and you're set , I really have no idea, GL Opie

This used car dealer brought over a 2001 CW CDM ITR a couple years ago and registered it in NY. It sold before I could get there but I did end up talking to the sales manager for a bit about it and they said it was a pretty easy process to bring it over the border. Even though they are a dealer (small one at that) the process may be the same or very similar. It'd be worth a call to see if they'll give you any tips. They are a pretty laid back dealer (ie low inventory turnover) so I'm sure they'll spare you a hot minute for a nickels worth of free advice.

huh, IIRC that started last year, at least that's what I was told when I passed my US citizenship last fall they told me Mexico and Canada now require you to have a passport to get back in when before it was just a driver's license

I wish I could offer some insight Opie. I've done it the opposite way and we have to do some mods to get the cars CSA approved. daytime running lights, cluster changes for warranty validation, etc. some cars aren't even allowed in Canada like the EVO VIII and IX for some weird reason. It more of an insurance problem for us where our insurance company won't insure certain cars. I wouldn't be too concerned about the inspection part since our cars look basically the same from a safety and emisions stand point.

And from there they also have a link to the us customs site about it which has a word doc with a lot of info.

As for the emmissions and stuff I do know a canadian ecu CAN be read by the OBDII scanners. We used one a couple of years ago to pass my friends 98 since at the time all he had was a jdm ecu.

huhhhh.

ummmm. how about you just buy one that has already been imported hint hint.

otherwise... you'll need a letter from the manufacturer stating that there are no recalls and the car complies with all safety standards. cdm speedo reads in mph and kph so that is good, no changes needed there. you'll need to pay tax and duty on it at customs since you have not owned the car for >1yr. when it's there they will do an inspection on it as well.

*thinks* i cant recall what else i had when i imported my typie... but that'll get the ball rolling at least.

To bring a car into Canada (other way) we faxed title, bill of purchase and copy of registration to Customs three days in advance of going to get the car. The actual inspection at the border consisted of checking the original documents and looking out the window to ensure the vehicle was the same colour as described on the paperwork. I think they were supposed to verify VIN#, but never did. It was very simple and I can't imagine it's too different going to the US.

I'm sure you're already covered, but I live in the Toronto area, if there is anything you want me to check out, let me know.

you only need a passport if you are flying into canada from the US.

http://gocanada.about.com/od/c...r.htm

"As of Dec 21, 2007, passport requirements have been once again delayed meaning that US citizens arriving in Canada by land or water do not need a passport until at least summer 2009. "

Anybody want mine, just cut out my picture and glue on yours.
