what gas to use in d16z6?
in the owners manual it says premium.i have used 91 and 93 for years.the other day i tried using 89 with no noticeable problems.is this going to affect my motor or gas mileage, and if so,how?
What makes you a better authority on gas octane over Mr. Honda's recomendations ?
If it states premium in the hand book, that's what it needs to run at it's best.
Now it may run fine on regular, but at what loss or expense ?
If "it's a honda and runs fine on regular" please explain.

backfiring is unused fuel entering the exhaust manifold and exploding, if thats happening then your tune was too rich, or your TPS was a bit slow.
All that matters is the Compression Ratio. If yours is high, like mine at 11.1:1, then yes, use premium. If its low, like 9:1, then just use regular. But I have no idea what the CR is for a stock D16Z6.

What manual are you looking at?
I'm looking at the '94 del Sol manual right now and for the S and Si models it says to use nothing lower than 86. The VTEC (B16) model it says to use premium (91 or higher).

Haha you sound like a clown, nah I better stop... Look man I dont know any Honda D series motor that needs to run on premium, they are called econoboxs for a reason. I dont know what his manual says for sure but I havent seen any manual from a civic that says use premium. Lol and Mr. Honda is just a group of individuals, highly skilled engineers I have no doubt, but if you educate yourself enough your just as knowledgeable as them. Dont hold anybody above yourself, everyone (almost everyone) on h-t has the capabillity to be as knowledeable about their car as Mr. Honda

I'm running a B16A2 ('99 Si) and 'regular' unleaded works great - better than 'premium' as long as I use Top Tier gas (Chevron, Shell, etc).
My suggestion is to run Top Tier 'regular' gas in your D16Z6, but don't take my word for it...

You can run it 100% fine on 87 octane (regular). If it's mis-firing on a stock D16Z6 - then you have other problems, and it isn't because of what octane fuel you're running.
If you think you get more HP, better engine life, or better gas mileage by using premium in a 100% stock D16Z6, then you should be shot.
87 octane is 100% fine.

the only time i ever used premium was when i had my GSR in my coupe... i used the 89 octane once and my car would sputter and feel really boggy... other than that i have a mini me with a Y7 block and a Y8 head and i run shell or conoco regular gas...
if indeed the manual does say use premium, then I see nothing in this iffy, cuddah, wouldah, shuddah, replies that indicate otherwise. Maybe in a clapped out 200k engine to save a little money ....... but, pay now, pay later .... 9.4:1 may not be high by racing standards, but it's up there ............. after all, what yah all think the "knock sensor" is for anyways ....
JAJAJA DUDE.. YOU DO NOT NEED PREMIUM ,,, YOU CAN PUT WATER ON YOUR TANK AND THAT ENGINE WILL GO EVEN FASTER.... I ALWAYS USED REGULAR.. ON MY Z6 AND NEVER HAD A PROBLEM.. Z6 ENGINES ARE THE BEST OF ALL SOCH ENGINES.. ...TAT.. MANUAL IS TO MAKE YOU SPEND MORE MONEY ON GAS.. YOU KNOW HOW BUS. IS!!

Shut up, putting 93 in a Z6 is absolutely uneccessary, you don't know what you're talking about. It's not "shoulda woulda coulda" answers - I've owned D series (both Z6 and Y8) or 3 or so years - always put 87 in it, never had a problem with it.
"After all, what ya all think the knock sensor is for.."
I don't even think there is a knock sensor in Z6's OR Y8's...
