Default what exactly is riding the clutch?

and how does it wear down the clutch? i get different answers from different people.

I always thought if you have the clutch pedal pressed in slightly then the plate would be lifted off the flywheel a little, so if it wasn't making good contact the plate would wear out more quickly??

I agree, riding the clutch is having your foot resting on it instead of the dead pedal.
