Default Taking forever to start...what might be the problem?

My CRX used to start right up after turning the key...but lately it seems as like it takes about 5-8 turns before it finally catches. What could be the problem, and it is something I should worry about right now? Once it sparks it starts fine and runs normal..but I just have to sit there and crank it for a while.

check plugs and plug wires...make sure they're connected well. pull plugs, see what color are the tips...

If the starting time becomes inconsistent...maybe 1 crank or maybe 30...then I'd check the main relay. VERY common problem.

The plugs are a light greyish color. I am running n2o also if that is revelent. According to NGK, the light greyish color should be normal...Just as long as it's not white white or a blueish. My wires are a little sloppy. They're OBX 10.3mm, and not the best quality. Would you suggest switching for 8mm and think that would help?

Where is the main relay located, and how easy is it to switch out?

Jan...I don't want to hear that

My car was in the shop getting the valves adjusted..so my mechanic threw them in there for me. He didn't check the gapping though, which I was kind of weary about...but forgout about it. Timing is retarted to either 14 or 13, can't remember which one.

i heard you should gap em out to like 28 or so, not 100% sure on what it should be, but make sure the plugs are 2 steps colder atleast..... and make sure you have your fuel set with a regulator or something....

Might have your ECT sensor checked for the voltage. It should read close to same as the IAC sensor on a cold engine, with Key On Engine Off. The wax pellet gets lazy, sending a cold/rich signal to the ECU, thus flooding a warm/hot engine.

Try letting the interior cool down, before starting it. If it starts, then chances are the Main Relay is on the way out...

I wouldn't spray until you get ALL of your fuel/spark issues in check. It aint worth it.

Thanks Lil. I think you might be right. I have had some other issued with the dizzy, and that may have lead to this. I am using a pretty worn out rotor right now b/c I could get the 90-91 Integra one to work right. I'll get a friend to try to crank it and I'll make sure I am getting spark on the other end of my plug wires before I rule out the dizzy.

if you smell a ton of gas it isnt fuel. if your smelling no gas while cranking its most likely a fuel problem

Default start simple

When was the last time you had a tuneup? I'm talking mostly about the distributor cap & rotor, along with the spark plugs & wires. Most of the time it's been my experience that a worn out distributor cap & rotor can make it take a lot longer for a car to start. Might want to start there.

Good luck,

Ryan P.
