How to tell if the bottom end is still good?
I bought a b18b engine with a bad head and just pulled the head off. I inspected the cylinder walls, and there are no signs of deep scratches or anything. There is a light and I mean super light scratch that you can barely see at different viewing angle. Overall it looks really good. My question is this...Does this mean my bottom end is still good?
When a ring goes bad, doesn't it totally mess up the cylinder wall? I remember tearing up a smoking lawnmower engine and the wall was totally messed up. Please give me some insights before I put the engine together with another head. Thanks so much.

I would rering it and install new bearings just to be safe. NPR rings and ACL bearings won't run you more than $120. Get a hone and resurface the block deck and cylinder head to give you a flat surface so you don't have leaks.
It's okay to see the cross hatch pattern from the original hone but anything deeper than that and I would certainly do a mild rebuild.

I know the best test is a compression test, but my head is off. I guess my best bet is put the new head on and do a compression test.
