Default Honda Insight: Battery and maintenant questions.

2000 Honda insight 120000 miles.
When Should i change the big batteries? (not the small battery in the engine bay)
And what else should i change out? like a major tune up.

I dont know where to post this, hopefully this is the right place.

It's sad but true that a website supposedly dedicated to Honda "tech" doesn't even have a forum for the model named Insight. Maybe they should change the name to "Some Hondas, Some tech". Good luck

big battery? thats a good question.

as for maintenance, i would make sure the o2 sensors are functioning nicely. the insight runs at 25:1 AFR's during highway crusing!

search around that autospeed site. one of the writers has an insight and does all sorts of cool mods (DIY, cheap/free)

awesome site

unless your having problems with the IMA system there is no need to service the hybrid battery.

Just like the old saying, "If it is not broken, why fix it" especially with hybrid battery pack. They are heavy, dangerous, and expensive (about 4-6k). If you do not know what you are doing you will get into serious danger considering the battery pack are rated 300 - 600volts.

h-t is great, but insightcentral.net is
where you will have more luck getting insight specific questions answered. Everyone here is absolutely right that the IMA pack is only replaced when it fails, and unless you get the IMA light, and the corresponding deterioration code, then the battery is fine. When I had an ef hatch, h-t was home. Now with the insight, i am at i-c more often, but h-t is great for non insight specific diys, and for that I will always come back to h-t.

You have the first generation of battery. So, a this time, it will work but not as new. If you change it for a better you will avec a better L/100km

The IMA battery is warrantied until 150k mi, unless you have a salvage title or a Canada car. The real way to check its health is to drive it, using a LOT of assist. Try to completely drain the battery, make sure it drains / recharges linearly top to bottom.

My IMA pack was replaced last year around 140k miles.

Fantastic car.
