how do i tell if a ball/roller bearing is bad?

how do i tell if a ball/roller bearing is bad?
i know that if it doesn't spin free or if it's gritty it's bad. are there any other symptoms as well?
the bearings are in an l3 tranny. one of the carrier bearings let go and the ring gear shaved a little of the case off. with that level of contamination inside the tranny, do i need just replace all my bearings?
