A/C Kit Or Piece Together from Junkyard Etc.?
1991 Civic LX Sedan here. I bought it new without air conditioning. Now I want to add a/c.
http://www.ackits.com has a kit for about $1000. OEM parts sites like http://www.bkhondaparts.com sell a new OEM compressor for about $300. What else should I buy new OEM and what do you all think I could piece together from the many junkyards chock full of Civics of this generation?

man, get the compressor and the condenser brand new from ebay 1 is around 100 and the other from 180-200 shipped.......
Get some a/c lines from the junkyard and buy a new dryer ($30) and expansion valve (25). I bet your car still has the evaporator. If so, go to autozone and buy the a/c cleaner in the pressurized can to clean the inside of the evaporator........
Thats around $350-$400 but the whole system is new......
Trust me, it will be worth it........... Otherwise the car will only get cold when you run or at rainy days lol.... At least get a brand new condenser....
I have a uncut harness and from a 91 CIVIC and a 96 r134a a compressor that fits the stock D series brackets and lines... I had it on my civic once.

JUN, thanks for the input. I just checked prices on Ebay and they are about what you say.
Two compressors are sold for my 91 Civic: Matsushita and Sanden. If I go with, say, the Matsushita, then in the junkyard as I pick up hoses etc. should I look for a Matsushita compressor setup?

exacly. All a/c hoses are the same except for the ones that connect to the compressor. They are both good compressor but if you are going to swap to a B series engine, then I recommend you to buy the sanden compressor.
I got 2 matsushita hoses since I went with the sanden setup if you need them.

Great info. Can you please elaborate on why the Sanden compressor is preferred in a B-engine equipped EF?
Thanks.

Well, the sanden compressor is smaller and fits all of the aftermarket brackets to mount it to the block. If you use a stock integra PR3 bracket, it bolts into 2 holes only but its a strong fit.... This is what im using and it holds pretty strong... Also there are some issues with the matsu... compresor that hits the crossmember and fitting a fan in there is a pain.... The only aftermarket bracket that you can use with the matsu compressor is the hasport one, and it runs for about $200
I am using the sanden condensor and the stock 88-89 civic 4dr fans with a B16A engine and a pr3/stock bracket....
The sanden compressor has a smaller pulley and it rotates faster than the matsu, but the matsu might have a stronger compressor inside, so thats why it has a bigger pulley....
