Default to o-ring or not to o-ring that is the question?

This is a debate we were having here a little earlier on in the day and had a bunch of people who swear there is no reason for them and some people who say they are needed.

what is everyone else thoughts?

I have had the same question in my mind No o-ring and gaskets can go. But at the same time I've been told you have to o-ring. GE say's no more than 15lbs on none o-ring blocks can we get some real solid information?

I made a post about this over a year ago and there was a lot of good information in that thread. Do a search under my screenname and it should come up in the archives. It's a very good thread and a very good debate!!

we sagest it on high boost motors not that it will not seal with out it but its good insurance. eggum never ran a oring just a .005 step deck that's how they wanted her blocks but other racers love the ornig they say it gives them a little more sealing power just in case. i leave it up to the customer preference.

Robert I know it has been a while but we ALWAYS had an O'Ringed block.............we also ran the stepped deck which is going to start another debate Ha Ha.

I am all about O'ringed blocks.........................my streetcar motor in my DSM is O'ringed, along with the spare shortblock sitting in the trailer.

Stock gasket ( MLS ) = copper o-ringed block - flat deck head
Copper gasket (standard) = steel o-ringed block - reciever grooved head
SCE ICS copper gasket = no o-ringed block - flat deck head

Step deck is always recommended in my opinion. I use up to .009 step deck on some blocks, but the standard is .003"! but BEWARE, the block MUST be honed with a TQ plate if you use a step deck!!! Otherwise you are just asking for bore distortion.

well ive already experienced an issue with a stock deck & a cometic head gasket.

must of went in the beginning of the run then up top this happens.
this was only running 30 psi also car ran for over a year not 1 problem then things went wrong. now im going for 40+psi so i dont need theese issues.
notice everything else looks good, lol
