Default B16A CRX with Y1 Transmission - Axle Issues

I have an '89 CRX Si with a B16A and Y1 transmission (it has LSD, I think that's the right model...). I have it swapped in with HASport mounts and linkage, and I am using Integra axles. AFAIK I have done everything right, however I am having axle binding issues, so maybe I didn't lol...

When I am driving it is fine, but when I turn a corner, it is grinding my axles and making a clunking noise that gets faster if I corner faster. If I corner aggressively, it doesn't seem to do it. Also, if I corner with the clutch pressed in, no grinding.

The motor came out of my friend's EF8, has 111,000kms, and the motor runs great. I drove his car and none of these issues were present while the motor was still in it.

I don't know what to do about this, so I need some help. Anyone have any ideas why this is happening?

what axles are you using? also how is your alignment, i remember one time my front toe was so off i had bad axle bind and it would clunk during turns.

how low is your car? it sounds like your axle pitch is off from being to low

Tried DA and DC axles, also the car is at stock height. I adjusted my coilovers back up to stock.

The car drove straight but I haven't had it in for an alignment since the swap.

Call Raxles and ask for Marty. I tried a gabillion different OTS axles and didn't get rid of my problem till i got my Raxles.

yea i think its time for new axles...who knows maybe you put a pin hole in the axle boot and it leaked all the grease out....but imo raxles or gators if you want to spend the money...and about the alignment, it would have to be way way way off for it to mess with the axles and you didnt say you were having steering issues or anything like that...which to me sounds like a bad crappy re man axle

I believe that the problem you are having is with the limited slip differential and not with axle bind.

The JDM EF Y1 gearbox has a clutch type limited slip differential. It requires special fluid because it is a clutch type differential. If you do not use the special fluid, then the differential will hop when you are turning.

I used GM LSD additive with GM syncromesh back in the day and it worked great.

I have used a Honda trans. fluid made for LSD. Dust rings I am not sure of. ABS or Non-ABS axles I am not sure of either, I would assume Non-ABS, but I will find out. I will get an alignment once this is sorted out for sure.

I got help from friends who have done B16 swaps before to do this swap for me. I just don't have enough tools to do it on my own. However, none of them have done a B16 EF swap with this transmission before AFAIK.

The car is with a local Honda pro right now who has been in the game for like 20 years so hopefully he can figure something out. Anything I find here I will relay back to him as well. I don't know if he is on here.

Thanks for all the help so far guys.

Just wanted to note that LSD was an option and not installed on all the Y1's

If you took it out of a real EF8 it's because the intermediate shaft is the wrong size. You need either the EF8 driver side axle or a DA midshaft.

Also, for further clarification, the motor came out of my friends real CR-X siR (EF8). It was brought in directly from Japan, and is (was) all original.

I didn't think honda made fluid specifically for clutch type LSDs?

Are you just using honda mtf?

Took the car for a drive.

When you corner aggressively, it does not bind. If the clutch is pressed in while cornering, no bind either. Only on slower corners does it happen. Drives straight.

Going to try some Raxles out of a friend's B16 EF. They do look shorter than my Integra axles, so I hope this works.

Can someone give me some more info on the correct transmission fluid to use? I was using the Honda made fluid I was told was for LSD. Should I use GM Syncromesh or something else?

Can someone explain why GM Syncromesh is needed for a transmission like my Y1? I feel like I know what I need now, I just like to know WHY I need it, or what makes it good etc.

The GM LSD additive is what quiets the chatter. You could use honda MTF + GM LSD additive.
