About a couple months ago I changed the piston rings, timing belt, head gasket, and a couple other seals on my engine. I was running rich due to a problem with the ecu, now that I have a different one, problem solved. I put about half a cup of sea foam in my oil to clean that, ran it for a little while, then changed the oil. But I'm a little hesitant about running it through the vacuum line. I've heard a couple instances where seals went out after using sea foam. I have a little d15b vtec 1.5 in my car, and the head gasket was a mls but now there is a different one on, I think its felpro. I just don't want to clean out all the carbon crap and take out the seals with it. Any one have bad experiences with sea foam or the likes of?

 

Well you all ready did the one I do not recommend . The seals you are worried about have oil on them correct?

Running it thru the IM is a better way to clean out your deposits I suggest running it thru the FPR vacuum line instead of the brake booster like the can say's. Run 5oz's shut it off and let it sit for 5 minutes repeat and go for a spirited drive to blow it all out.

 

when i use sea foam i go for a third in the gas tank, third through the fpr and a third in the crank case. never had a problem.

 

You don't recommend putting it in oil? I only used about maybe 1/8 of the can in the oil, went up and down the street for a few minutes, then changed the oil. Anywho, Ill try putting it in that way instead of the brake booster line. Thanks for the info.

 

I know the guys' on a Kawasaki forum swear by the stuff. They practically run the old bikes on the stuff. In the oil and gas. I don't know about the vac lines though..

 

Well the seal issue is a subjective thing. Theres 3 possible issues there. If you've got crap blocking up the seal, preventing a leak, and then you clean the crap off, theres nothing to stop the leak that would have not happened if the crap was still there.

Also earlier synthenic oils had an issue with their properties that caused the seals to swell or shrink depending on what kind of oil they used. Modern synthenics are engineered to retain similiar swell/shrink charateristics of dino oil. Seafoam could possibly alter this, but it shouldnt generally.

The last thing is that all the crud it cleans off would now be circulating in your oil accelerating wear until the filter cleans it up, and does not open the bypass valve. Prevenative maintainence is key, but if the damage is already done, cleaning it up can cause more damage.

I was running rich for about a couple weeks, then I got a different ecu. I don't drive a lot either, just basically to work and back everyday. I checked my spark plugs after I ran the new ecu and they weren't black anymore, more like a light brown. I don't think theres too much danger considering everything I've done and the time frame that I did it in.
