hey honda-tech, I come you you a beaten man... but I'm planning on bouncing back from my defeat.
I need to know how I can buy back my car because right now I've gotten mixed advice from friends.
well lets start with how my car got stolen, it's a 2000 civic Si that was towed away from the parking lot and stripped. I was in China at the time on vacation and it was actually stolen when my mom took it out. and when they found it the interior was stripped to bare they took intake headlights and hood as well but surprisely didn't take anything else. and now when I saw it even more parts are missing, it seems the towing company decided to steal a few parts too... ******** (they took front bumper, grill, and pass. fender and lip).
well now I'm waiting for the adjuster and insurance company to come up with estimates as it sits in the holding yard and my question is... how do I get my car back?
should I ask them not to total it? total it and ask to buy it back? give me options and hopefully I can start the rebuilding project.
thanks for any help you can bring me and I guess I'll post pictures of what's left of the car later on...

depends, why would you want to keep it? does it still have the same engine with all your mods? if not, just for personal reasons?
Whatever the reason be, say you want to keep it. The insurance company will only give you market value for car, which is a average of what local 2000 Si's sold at dealerships. With that said, i dont know what they do with the cars after they total them, but i assume its something to make a little money back.
Now, since they only took whole body parts, and if there is no serious dmg to frame or show of fire, they probably wont total it. They will just pay a repair shop to put those 'said' parts stolen. I believe you have the right to take whatever their settlement will be and say that you will take it to your shop and pay your own difference. I done this with a civic of mine got hit in a hit n run. they gave me a estimate of $1100, i went out and bought my own parts off of craigslist and put them on myself ^^, but that was just cosmetic dmg. your car might be different.

okay yeah it's for personal reasons, but the thieves actually left my b16 in the car. so I guess it's not too bad. and not frame damage that I can see.
you should be able to buy the car back from the insurance company and fix it with your settlement money my one buddy did that got like 4500 for the car bought it back for like 500. not really that bad tho could be down to nothing with no motor or trans. any kind of security?

only **** I had was a two way alarm and one kill switch... I dunno how or what happened... wasn't there... my mom drove it and just slipped up somehow. see I wanted to put on more security layers before I left for china and I didn't think my mom would take it out... I guess that's what happens when I leave her with a key...
That car has an actual cash value of around 7k, so it may not total if they can find some decent used/aftermarket parts.
If the car does total we will usually deduct the salvage value of the car from the settlement amount if you wanted to keep the car. So say the insurance co. gives you an actual cash value of 7k plus sales taxes and it comes to 7.5k w/ a salvage value of 1.5 k, they will cut you a check for 6k and you can use that to find your own parts and rebuild the car.
You would have to get a salvage title on the car and I don't know about getting restored salvage titles where you live. Your adjuster should be able to explain the process to you.
