Kaaz LSD questions.....
I destroyed my stock ITR tranny 2 nights ago, at Atco. Something went wrong, RPMs shot up to 9K, crazy wheel hop, BOOM. No holes in the tranny housing though. Tranny just made grinding noises. Doesn't move.
Anyway, I picked up an ITR tranny with Kaaz LSD (I definitely paid too much, but I needed a tranny right away). A few questions. Just put the tranny in my car..... I know it's normal for the LSD to click, but is it supposed to like kick back in the steering wheel? Is that normal? Also, sometimes at low speed, going forward, in 1st or 2nd, the car makes a little chattering noise. I was thinking it's a loose axle, but the 32mm nut is tight. Seems to be coming from the left side of the car, but I could be wrong. I was thinking maybe the axle popped out, but then the car wouldn't drive correctly, but it does. Another thing, am I supposed to use a different speed sensor? This tranny came with no speed sensor. I tried putting my stock one in, and it doesn't go all the way down. If I do use a different one, where can I pick one up? (I am in NJ)
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

The KAAZ LSD uses a KAAZ specific speed sensor. What type of gear oil are you using because some oils will cause the disc to clatter. The problem with the KAAZ LSD's in the US is most of them are setup for Gymkhana. The initial torque setting is very high and the cam angle is low so lockup occurs at a very quick rate.
The LSD was broken in with the Kaaz break in oil. I didn't have time to run and get Kaaz oil, so I just threw in some 5W30 motor oil. Will probably change it to the Kaaz oil tomorrow.
So I definitely need a Kaaz speed sensor?

DO NOT USE 5W-30 with a clutch LSD. Drain that stuff and get some 75w-90 or 75w-80 GL5 gear oil for FWD trannies. Motor oil is OK for open diffs and ITR/CTR diffs but will kill the plates in a clutch LSD.
Try contacting KAAZ USA about the speedo sensor gear.

Does the final drive make a difference if I run the JDM FD as opposed to the USDM FD?
I checked the Kaaz homepage. Doesn't say anything about a speed sensor gear. Only thing they sell other than the LSD is their oil.
75W-90 will definitely go in tomorrow.
I've always run 10W30 motor oil in my stock ITR tranny. Hasn't given me problems, till now.

i dont know, but i have heard of people who swap out the final drive have the same popping you describe. which are you using? jdm or usdm?

Make sure the oil is GL-5 and add some Ford friction additive. I sold a KAAZ YS1 a while back and the speedo gear is different than the OEM gear. The FD has nothing to do with the speedo gear.
Since you bought this tranny/LSD used you might want to rough up the seller for more info. Was it abused? How often was the oil changed? What oil was used? How long was the LSD used?
Overhaul kit is about $140.

.....no popping with my final drive.
Dee, is Redline MTL ok for Kaaz or other clutch type lsd? with ford friction modifier...
It was fine with my Kaaz.
No holes in the tranny housing though.

Reid - who has a B16 tranny casing with a huge hole in it for sale cheap if anyone's interested...
OK, got some of it taken care of.
I got hold of the speed sensor that was on the tranny, and it looks like a stock ITR speed sensor, but the bottom gear is much smaller than stock. This one dropped right in and bolted up, and the speedo is working again. Problem solved, for this at least...
The going start making noise was from something else. My power steering belt was all kinds of loose and was flapping and ****, so I tightened it up. Going straight, the car makes no popping noises anymore. Another problem taken care of.
Last thing, on turns, the car feels really funky. Makes all kinds of popping and clunking noises. Going to swap over to the 75W90 oil tonight. I've talked to a few friends running the Kaaz LSD, and they said it's normal for it to feel almost like driving on busted axles. Feels kinda crazy...

welcome to the world of KAAZ LSDs, i liked mine for that whoppin 3 months that i had it for. broke all internal gears. brand new $850 shipped from Dan @ Godspeed. i will never buy another.
The hurk-a-jerk feeling is common with high intial torque setting LSD's. Since I got my Mugen setup for drag racing it makes the hurk-a-jerk feeling when making slow tight turns. Hurk-a-jerk = cam/clutch plates engaging/disengaging at a quick rate to control traction to both wheels.
Dan knows a lot about KAAZ setups but he is out of commission right now because his mother is sick. There are 35/45/55 degree cams and initial torque can be re-adjusted for smoother engagement at your next overhaul. Overhaul is easy but a special tool is needed to test the torque setting. You might want to contact KAAZ about the closest authorized KAAZ dealer near you.
I have been using Castrol GTX 75w-90 GL-5 with my Mugen for 4 years without any problems. Actually I used HKS GL-5 for the first two years but that crap gets expensive when you change fluids every 5k kms( everything gets changed: engine oil, tranny fluid, fuel filter). When the diff was overhauled 8 months ago the plates still had a lot of life left in them but I replaced them anyway since my car produces 100hp more than stock and that number will jump to about 250hp more than stock in a few weeks.

OK, I put some Castrol 75W90 GL5 synthetic oil on there just now. A lot of the clicking and crunching went away. It's definitely not as harsh as it was last night.... but it still crunches a little. I can definitely live with it now, but it's still a little weird. When I drive by people, they look at me like WTF???
So are these LSD's as strong as people say they are? I might go try it out tomorrow at the drag strip. Gonna be pretty depressed if it blows up.

Go to a junkyard and find a Delorean. Find the flux capacator and make sure it is ok. Then, set the time circuits to go back 6 years, then post in this thread.
