O.T. Drove a good friends SE-R today.
Well, all i can say is that i was very disappointed considering all the hype about this car before it was released for sale. Maybe i have been driving my lightly modified type r too long now too remember what it was like when it was stock to do a fair comparison. Either way i think there is no comparison in the two cars at all. Has any one here had the chance to drive one and what did you think about it?
I think the general concensus is that Nissan overhyped the car... The Nissan Sentra SE-R Spec V might be a very well made car, but it is made to compete with the Ford Focus SVT, Civic Si, and Protege MP3. It is not at the level of a Type R.
i test drove one of these with my brother. he was looking at this car or the Si. i'll be completely honest, i didn't feel much power difference between the spec v and the Si. 180lbs torque? where the hell is it? trust me you dont feel much of the torque, car feels extremely heavy.
I drove it...not that it sucks...but the power I was hoping for just wasn't there. I WAS surprised however, when we installed his intake and I heard the "VTEC" like sound. Doesn't Nissan adapt a powerband approach to creating a "VTEC" like motor, similar to motorcycles?
I test drove a spec-v with a tag price of $21k. It's way overpriced and the interior feels really cheap...It's just a $10k sentra hopped up with suspension/interior/better engine. I also test drove a 2002 vw gti 1.8t and those are ******* sweet

The new Turbo Protege looks pretty nice...I want to test one of them out. Pretty heavy, but it has good power and nice features. I have a full package I got from my friend who owns a Mazda dealer. Mazda is going to push something called "Mazda Speed," really trying to sell their "Racing Heritage." Looks like they may have a winner with the Turbo Protege, except that it will be sold in extremely limited quantities. I can scan some of the info/pics if you guys want to see them, they are straight from Mazda.
175 HP through 6 Speeds absolutely blows. The low redline doesn't help either. I often have to remind myself that it's JUST A SENTRA.
I've driven the SE-R's and I gotta say they have gobs of torque. The shifter is shitty, seats feel very very cheap, and in the end, it's just a Sentra.
BTW I raced a bone stock SE-R with 2 other friends in my R (just intake) and through first he had the jump on me but once I got my revs up I walked him easily.
He was quicker than I thought though.

Yep...I hit fuel cut off 3 times unintentionally during my test drive. If redline was raised by 1000 rpm, it would make the SE-R so much more enjoyable during spirited drives.

I guess you're talking about the new one. I have a 91 se-r.
For what it is, its a good car. Has factory limitedslip. Doesn't weight much. Has 140hp. Has 180,000 miles and still runs strong.
But to be fare, I've driven quite a few sports cars before buying the ITR, and none were close to the performance.

the new se-r's suck.
My list of SE-R generations from worse to best.
Worse: B15 Sentra SE-R/SE-R Spec V
Middle: B14 200SX SE-R
Best: B13 Sentra SE-R
None of the rest live up to the 91-94's
-Dave, who has a MDM B13 SE-R

$21K for a Spec V!? Are you nuts!? I had a local dealer BEGGING me to take one away for $16.8K with mats and Auto-mate alarm to boot! Either the dealers in your area are fiercely gouging or you aren't much of a negotiator. Cuz here in NY dealers are giving those things away at $300 over dealer cost. There isn't much of a market for 'em here I guess.
I didn't even try to negotiate with the guy I was just driving it to see how it was. I was actually going to try to get a 2002 gti 1.8 but I realized I didn't want to be in debt for 5 years after I get outta college so I just bought a used gsr and I haven't regretted it one bit yet
