Default Compression Test Results

I knew this motor had low compression. From left to right i think its 4-3-2-1 correct me if im wrong.

120-120-95-95

Cars burns a lot of oil about a quart every 3 weeks if you hit vtakk everywhere. Doesnt smoke bad so i thought. Some friends say they white smoke when im on it, or at start up.

What all do yall think is wrong??

I thought it was piston rings. With the compression results some ppl say its a blown headgasket due to both cylinder being out next to each other. Block maybe bent? No coolant and oil mixture. Nothing on the plugs when pulled out.

-thanks for any helpful posts

Takes abuse.

Is there any where I can read up on motor rebuilding?

I dont know where to start.
What to replace?

squirt some oil down the spark plug holes and see if the compression rises.

Yup, if the compression goes up with a cap-full of oil in the cylinder, it's bad rings, if not it's bad valve seals.

i have the same issue right now. im my em1.

my comp. is 150 150 145 150...
burning oil like a *****! ive never heard of the oil in the cylinder thing^^ but that sounds good. i think im tearing down motor this week tho. new rings, headgasket, timing belt, water pump, all new seals.
but i heard if its your valve guide seals that it would only smoke on start up or take off. til they got hot and oil got on them then they expand.... whats up with that?

You want compression test results to be within 10% of each other, unless you typo'd those results I don't see any reason to teardown based on the compression test. I'd suggest some more diagnosis before fixing stuff that isn't broken.

OK ..here is my deal..i have solid 200 compression through all 4... i use full castrol syntech... but i constantly burn oil.. specially when its hot ... the thing that doesnt make sence.. is when i first do an oil change.. i put 5 courts in my jdm gsr. and 2-4 days later my oil is is almost completly empty... but once i fill it again..im good for a while.. .. sorry for stealing your thread..

My b16 had bad rings and before it was rebuilt was like 190 all across, havent checked it since the rebuild but it will be higher since i had the head shaved a little extra, but if someone wants I can check it.

2 cyls together indicates blown head gasket between those two cyls.

well someone told me it could be the oil consumption rings on the piston. so im just gona replace rings, valve seals, headgasket, and other gaskets and seals.

You don't "just replace" rings, you are talking about a full teardown and rebuild, you should have the piston bores checked, and possibly machined depending on what shape they are in. If they are in bad shape, you may need to get bigger pistons to fit the fresh bores. If you're taking it that far apart, you'd be a fool not to use new bearings when you put it together. Just so you know what you're getting yourself into here.

If you want the same thing you have now but without burning oil, buy another B16 IMO. If you want an upgrade, maybe look into putting your B16 head on a B18b bottom end and build an LSVtec, or you could use a GSR bottom end, or you could rebuild your current bottom end with different pistons or something, there's endless options. If the rings are toast, the motor is toast, pretty well the same consequences as a spun bearing as far as cost to rebuild.

Edit: just noticed that wasn't the original poster, lol. The above applies mostly to a B16.

its costing me like 300 to rebuild this motor. ive built a lsvtec b4.... not cheap. plus u have to get a tune, ecu and u have to put like 5 different motor parts into one. its a hassle. ill stick with the b16. and theres no need to bore if the walls are ok. just a nice hone.
if u can build me a lsvtec or a "good" b16. (if u can find a good b16 thats not been beat to hell and back.,.....) for under 300 please by all means ill do it. but its too expensive and too much hasle.

Also make sure to have the throttle opened while doing the compression check. Heres something for yall, I did a comp 200 across the board and I also did a leakdown test which all were under 3%. I have a b16 rebuilt block with a jdm b16 head (over 100k on the head which is probably the issue). It only smokes when I get into vtec and sometimes in vacuum only right after I get on it. Seems to me that hondas just smoke. Every honda I ever see either on the dyno or at the track seems to smoke a lil once vtec is engaged.

Pretty much every VTEC motor I've seen smokes in VTEC, but yeah you probably need a rebuild. Did you full throttle while compression testing? I'd say buy an engine rebuild kit for like 300, get the cylinder walls honed and hot tanked while your at it , head resurfaced, and then you should be satisfied. Those numbers were really low though...my D15B put 220 across.

i just got my compression test done on my d16z6 and it was 130 all across and everything is brand new and strong but if you want to see if you head gasket is really shot take some wd40 and spray it around the head by the gasket while its running and if the rpm go up than your gasket is shot otherwise you most likely need new rings thats the biggest thing when a car starts smoking the rings are starting to go out and makes it burn oil but either way you have to take the motor apart which then you should change all gaskets seals bearings if they have any sign of wear on them rings check everything out and make sure everything is with in the specs its suppose to be for your motor just make sure you know what your getting yourself into b4 you do any first its not just a walk in the park you have to have an idea of what your doing and do thing by the book b/c if you dont your going to run into problems and its not going to run right
