I just bought a 96 Honda Civic LX Sedan D16Y8 to flip and make some cash.
Trying to work out some of the kinks on the car before I can sell it.
1. The car overheats. Fan is not turning on. But hooked up a lead from the battery to the fan and it works fine. So could this be a bad sensor or relay?
2. This could determine problem 3. When going over bumps there is a clicking sound made in the passenger wheel well area like something is loose. All bolts are tight and nothing is out of place. What do you think it is?
3. When you take your foot off the throttle the car drives slightly off to the right. Alignment is fine when driving. Its to the point where you have to correct the steering wheel to stay in your lane. ????
Thanks for your help guys. I bought the car for way cheap and willing to let it go below Blue Book to just make some quick cash. So not wanting to spend a lot into it to give someone else a great deal.

replace your temp switch, w/ radiator cap off, rev the motor from the cable and check for flow within the radiator to verify your water pump.
My civic clicked when going over bumps and stuff, I added a camber kit and it solved the problem. The kit had new upper ball joints which corrected the issue since mine were all split and worn out. You might want to check the rubber seat above & below your spring also, they tend to dry out and squeak.
the car pulling could be a result of worn ball joints, tire pressure, caliper might be sticking a little, ect.
Good luck with the flip. I don't know it all so don't bash me

How are you able to test the relays without replacing them? Does the computer throw a code?

Is this the one of the two right above the tranny and under the distributor? Or is it the one on the thermostat housing?
Which # is it on the list in the link? Thanks for your help.

Have you checked the shoes in the right rear brake? If they're engaging a bit then it could be causing a pull when you're off the throttle...

I have not checked the brakes yet even though those might be the problem. After I get the overheating problem fixed I was going to take the car down to LeShwab and have them check everything out for me.
Can anyone help with the overheating problem? I just need to know what relay to replace that turns the fan on.

The sensor is on the thermostat housing. if you want to check to make sure that is it just unplug the sensor and then take a paper clip and jump the two wires if the fan comes on then you have verified that not only the power source but all the wiring is correct. if it dosent come on then I would go to the relay and jump pins 87 and 30 and also jump the two wires at temp switch. if it works, then plug the sensor in and wait till operating temp or just a little above cause you need to make sure that the fan would be on if at that temp and then jump 87 and 30 on relay again if it still works then somewhere on the control side of the relay is bad or the relay it self is bad. I dont know why I went through all that hondas burn up temp switches like no other but still do the test so you arent buying un-needed parts. as far as popping or clicking in the suspension try to get it down to either pass front or rear then put it up on a jack w\ the wheel off try to move the suspension as much as possible this may work better with another jack to help compress the spring then just check for noises and blown boots or anything. or just take it to the alignment shop and they might be able to tell.
just to make sure you are careful when plugging and unplugging this cause I replaced one and after wards it would overheat randomly and the weird thing was that it would cool off when taking a right turn. took me three days to figure out that the pin in the connector was just slightly bent causing it to touch and untouch but would always make contact during right turns. it was weird just be careful and save yourself the headache

Thanks for you're help. I'm going to jump it from the temp switch now. If that does not work where is the relay to hook up to pins 87 and 30?
Thanks for your help
Thanks for your help
the relay is under hood fuse\relay box. and on the relay it self you should see a diagram showing which pin is which then just follow the diagram to jump the wires. in some cases the diagram wont be on the side so look at the pins on the relay two might be silver and two will be cooper. stick to the same like color and jump them to make it work.

Ok I fixed the overheating problem. I replaced the fan switch on the thermostat housing and the thermostat because of the high heat. Works like a champ now.
I was messing around with the steering wheel and noticed some play in it. Only the driver wheel moves during the play and not the passenger wheel. Bushings are fine. Is there something I need to replace or adjust?

So I toke the Civic to Les Schwab. They checked it out and said that the inner tie rods would need to be replaced. Its about a $350 fix through them with alignment. Or I can do it myself for $40 for the parts and $29.99 for the alignment. (I rather do it myself)
Does anyone know how easy or hard it is to replace those?

Can I get some more help. Thanks
