Couple questions before freshening up!?
alright so i have the *
* jdm *
* 97 spec R motor.....loving the motor from day one.....although ive been through a good bit with the car lol (long story)
on to the good stuff:::::::
i am wanting to "freshen" the motor up, the motor has around 74k on it (bought from jhot with about 67k). i am probably going to redo the head with arp studs definately but unsure with the rest.
one question is, are the later ITR cams better/more aggressive than the 97 and if so is it a big difference.
and if i do decide to get, i guess around 2000-2001 cams, what aftermarket valvesprings, retainers, etc....can i go with if any?
i am wanting to freshen it up with a couple extras but dont want the car down too long, because i do not have the funds for the *good stuff*.....(bigger cams)
i have a hard time explaining things but hopefully somebody will help out.....
thanks
edit::::i guess i should put i have an ARC intake (just the pipe) w/ an apexi filter (both came with the motor) and i have a 98- spec jdm 4-1 header

yea especially for a 97....came out of the 4dr (DB8) R.....but as far as modding just putting newer R cams if they help and aftermarket springs, retainer, etc....but nothing is wrong with the motor....just smoking when in VTEC....and i have heard that the R likes to get new valve stem seals and maybe some piston rings while around 80k

The intake cam was diff and the exhaust cam is the same. You can continue to use stock springs/retsiners if you like.

If I were you, I will just replace valve seals to take care of the smoking in v-tec. The newer CAMs don't realy do much when compare to the '97 CAMs. Advance the timing by 2-3 degree may yield the same result and it is free
Heck, take off the power steering belt will free up 4-5 HP to the wheel
and that is also free. So, as you can see, there are other worthy mods that you can do beside spend $200-$300 on newer ITR CAMs and only get 4-5 HP to the crank

FWIW, after riding in both back to back. My "butt dyno" could not tell the difference. Sure, there is a diff but I couldn't "feel" it.

so just stick with the cams i have now?.....and i will probably still get aftermarket (supertech, toda, omnipower etc..) springs/retainers etc...just for a little extra fun i guess...hopefully they will be worth the money....
i will also do reg. maintenance (t-belt, water pump, all that good stuff) and also a new oil pump too...
but as far as porting and polishing, and valve jobs what should be done?
oh and thanks for all the advice guys

What "extra fun" do expect from aftermarket springs and retainers?? All they allow you to do is rev higher which is completley pointless in a stock motor as you don't make power any higher.
No point in replacing the oil pump. Honda oil pumps literally can last 200,000 miles. PM user Aquafina and he can get you suited with a valve train set. He was an Expo sponsor and is a dealer for Rocket Motorsports, Supertech, etc. You could even ship him the head and have him do the assembly. Make sure and buy OEM honda parts and always get them from Len at Son's Acura. They were also an Expo sponsor but also give honda-tech members 10% off.
