New teg owner/car is cutting out HELP!!!
Hey guys
New user.. so hi im Andy from Stoke-on-Trent, England!
Purchased a 1997 Honda Integra Type R DC2 last week, all has been sweet, however, I got an insurance approved Cat1 alarm/immobiliser fitted today… and I have a problem!!!
I took it out for the first time after the alarm/immobiliser was fitted, and its cutting out, feels like it has lost power, and idles at less than it should (under 1k rpm), more detail below might help.
The cutting out…
It cuts out when you stop, or just before you stop, basically once you have revved the car, its cuts out when the revs fall, as they continue to fall to 0, rather than to idle.
Also…
On the drive home, from the first time I stopped and noticed it cut out, the engine check light came on and the speedometer stopped working, then the speedometer started working again, and the next time the car cut out, when I started again the engine check light was gone..
Im hoping that it’s the immobiliser, and not an engine problem, any ideas of what it could be? If its not the immobiliser?
And I hope it all makes enough sense…
Thanks
Andy

welcome to a fellow UKian
first of all, is the car completely standard, or are there any aftermarket parts, intake etc.? that doesn't include the alarm/immobiliser
it won't be the immobiliser, so you can forget about that

How does it start when cold? Do you have to keep giving it gas to keep alive? Maybe a tad bit more information about when it works fine and doesn't.
Also next time it throws a light; check the code right then and there. This might eaisly narrow down the problem.

Hello again and thanks for the welcome Ian :D
Well...induction is non-standard, and looking past its sell by date (was already planning on returning it to standard), and there’s some shitty after market chip...which im going to remove!
I have spent the past hour having a play with things, and I think there is something wrong with the idle control system, as when you play around with the pipes it gets better, or cuts out, depending on the amounts of air, let in…
The one thing im struggling to get my head round is why this has happened overnight, as something must have changed for it to happen. Drive home late last night, all is well, acceleration picks up as it should, its idling as it should etc.
My problem is lack of knowledge with Honda engines, If something goes wrong with a classic Mini im your man to fix it...but this is my first Honda engine...so im guessing really!
So, any advice and thought on the subject are much appreciated!!
Anyway I’m going to get it to my local Honda dealership in the morning...

Hey Andy,
Congrats on the new purchase. Coincidentally the same thing happened to me after I had my alarm installed. The idling and cut out. Does the radio also reset when you are driving as well?
This all happened right after I had the alarm. I brought it back to the shop that did the alarm. He re-did the wiring and changed out a few fuses. Problem never came back.

Well that’s interesting... lets hope I have the same problem!
I've spoken to Honda (on the phone) and they think its the alarm as well, they think its to do with how the alarm has been wired into the car. Something to do with the fuel cut off/ignition cut off, which somehow has triggered my idle control system to malfunction...
Anyway the people who fitted the alarm are coming out to have a look... so fingers crossed its cost free job (if it is the alarm), if not its Ł70 and off to Honda
The joys of owning cars :D
