Default OEM Tach inconsistent.....

94 civic EX. Sometimes the tach reads correct, other times it is way off calibration. Like a claimed 6k rpm after easy acceleration, shift to the next gear and it drops to 2k. the whole time it was actually more like 4500-3500 type transition. And it will go from reading correct to not between a shift.

sound like it would just be the tech itself going bad? Or is there something with the ignition system (like distributor etc) that could randomly be sending crazy signals?

Also, would any 92-95 civic tach work as a replacement... like if i bought a working 93 lx automatic gauge cluster, switched out the whole tach part into my stock cluster, and switched face plates so I still had the correct red line. might get out cheaper if I can do that, instead of buying a whole new gauge cluster for an EX with a manual tranny (since more people want those.)

I have some odd knocking (thought to be caused by excessive leanness from an unknown cause as of now) going on at random (usually when warmed up) and it is accompanied by power loss.

yesterday i noticed the car felt amazing power/response wise... and i looked at the tach and it was reading correct... by the time i went back out after work the engine lost its pep... the knocking again... the engine just has an in general bad "tone" to it and the tach was retarded again.

may not have any type of connection, but i was curious if they may be linked...

so there are two questions stated.... switching in any tachometer hardware and could there be a relationship between the tach and ignition knocking thanks

Didn't figure I'd get a lot of responses on this one.... a little a.d.d. type description I know. Sorry. Anybody?

Yes any 92-95 tach will work, its plug n play, if that doestn fix it i would lean towards the distributor, theres something in there (forgot its name) that provides that tach signal i believe.
