Seeing as how no stock vtec ecu engauges the crossover that low i dont think your in vtec. You say it studders, im leaning towards timing off, or you igniter coil is going out because that is usually around the rpms that they studder when that happens.

the P72 ECU will engage VTEC at 4400 RPM.

Maybe your tach is off and is reading 3800.

Does it stutter just at 3800? Or does it stumble all across the rev range?

once vtec kicks in,its pretty smooth,if i feather the pedal the car is real smooth ,but if i punched it is when it stutters.

I'm not trying to break your *****, but the logical thing to do in this situation is check which code your ECU is throwing.

Try checking your O2 sensor and catalytic converter.. that's what happened to my teg too.. i put a new o2 and put a test pipe on.. that fixed it.. just a suggestion...

I thought that the secondary butterflies in the intake manifold open at 4400 and vtec at 5800 on a GSR

Other way around. The point of the butterflies is to have a good torque band down low (close to restrict airflow at low RPM) and a good top end (open up to increase airflow at high RPM). The butterflies open at around 5800.

However, the OP's engine has no butterflies so that obviously makes no difference in this case.

Well the problem is listed: your running a p72 ecu on a b16 motor..

b16's are supposed to crossover around the 5.5k - 5.8k range.

When I did my first swap I ran a jdm gsr ecu on my obd1 jdm b16 and it crossed over at 4.5k (btw your tach is off, your not hitting vtec at 3.8k) and if I feathered it it was smooth but if you give it WOT it bogs/stutters whatever you wanna call it, but around the 6k range it picks back up and pulls hard right? Problem is vtec is engaging to early and its dumping to much fuel, replace ecu with proper setup for a b16. When I did the car pulled great.

Ya, your tach is off, either the cluster/tach was previously screwed with and now its off, try putting another cluster/tach in and see if the rpms are more accurate, if they are still off trace the rpm signal wire and make sure there is no breaks/unusual bends in it. Keep me updated on how fixing it is going.

/Thread.. thanks..

Regardless the ecu would be throwing a code for the secondary butterflies which the b16 is not equipped with and he would be in the same boat as he is now asking HT whats wrong, so instead of making fun of him why not offer some help or GTFO...

...but 4,500rpm is STILL WRONG for a B16A engine.

It might run "way better" but it's never going to pull well with such a low VTEC cross over. I'd say 5000rpm is the lowest you'd want on an other wise stock B16A, and really 5200-5500 might even prove to be a smoother cross over point.

You need to get a P28 ECU and have it chipped on a dyno to ideally run your engine.
