Alright, I just registered to take the course next month and i saw that they require me to have long sleeved shirt or jacket, shoes above the ankle and riding gloves, they can provide the helmets. Now, I've been wondering, should I go ahead and buy most of the gear now, or just get something to go by for the test and then buy everything whenever I get a bike? What do you guys think would be a smarter decision?

 

If you have the $, it doesn't hurt to just go out and buy it. But MSF usually supplies all that for you except for boots I believe. You won't be going more than 30MPH in a closed course, so I would suggest that you just get a long sleeve shirt and "work boots". Just use their helmet and gloves.. You'll be set..

 

I would get your own helmet, other stuff perhaps not. And for my course top speed was 18mph

You could be like 1 of the 12 people in the class, and find out riding really just isnt for you

 

if you have a bike or plan on getting a bike soon it'd be a good investment, but buying gear just to take the class is a lil over kill.. personally i'd wait and try and try and find a good deal.. but that's just me... + everyone knows your gear has to match your bike so you can look like a power ranger!

 

The only thing MSF really cares about is what you wear on your feet.

Of course, I took "shoes above the ankle" to mean shoes above the ankle. Obviously they wanted boots. I was late to my first session because of traffic. Crashed a few times before I finally could get in, but I got kicked out for wearing Jordans. Finally was able to get back in SuperBowl weekend after I bought some Tim's. So yea, just make sure you have some sort of boots on and you're good.

 

Yeah, seems that would be a better idea to buy apparel after having at least some experience on a bike, hmm ok then i get some work boots since you said they may make a problem of high ankle sneakers.

There's really now need to jump out and buy a bunch of gear. Some basic gloves will work, do yourself a favor and use their helmets. You'll be going really slow and talking to instructors, so its best to wear an openface, which is likely what they'll provide. You won't want one on the street. People act like you will get lice or something, but people who can pay for MSF, can afford basic gromming. Don't forget eye protection.

Ever see a set of Tim's after a crash? those things offer absolutely ZERO abrasion resistence. I couldn't believe it, 25 mph lay down, and my buddies feet got trashed.

Meanwhile, another buddies Alpinestar SMX's survived a 105mph lowside....they weren't pretty, but held up great.

 

i think hes just talking about for that course, no sense in paying 300 for boots to ride a few days and hate riding.

 

Yea. I just got some them for the course. No need to spend a few hundred just for the course.

 

I'm taking the class this weekend. Just so I'm clear on what I need to have.

1. Work boots (i.e. timberland style)
2. Long sleeve shirt. Regular button up is cool right?
3. Gloves? Any kind are cool for the course?
4. Eye protection? Necessary?

1) Old Nike bball shoes
2) Joe rocket gloves
3) Shoei helmet
4) UMD hoodie
5) Jeans

2. OK, but I think a thermal or a thin cotton shirt would be best
3. Yeah, but no latex. My MSF gave me freakin' warehouse gloves w/ the grip on the tips...Just use what they give you.
4. Not necessary but if you have them, why not?

 

I'm taking my MSF class tomorrow. Purchased a set of alpinestars smx gloves for 59 dollars. Figured that I might as well get it now if I have to get it later.
