Default Need Help Please ID'ing this 88 Civic...

I'm new to Civics and reading all the nomenclature is overwhelming to a newb.

I'm looking at maybe snagging this 88 Civic up and need help in further IDing the true model and engine/tranny #s.

I haven't yet inspected it in person, only thru Emails.

The owner says it's a CRX (not) with a 1.5L engine and 4 speed tranny. He also says it has around 200k miles and has a broken speedo meter cable.

It's supposed to run and drive just fine.

He's asking $700.

BTW, the interior/seats are shot.

Here's some pics.

Thanks for your reply.

What engine should be in it ?

What are the #s for it ?

I'm looking for the transmission ratios for the 4-speed manual that's in it as well.

If its indeed a std. Base model hatch and it has its ofirgional engine then it will be stamped d15b1. Those are equipped with 70 hp and get about 40 mpg.

That's most likely a non vtec d15b though. My hatch has one and the valvecovers are that color.

Where would I find the engine #s ?

How many miles are these engines good for (if taken care of) ?

Is $700 reasonable for it ?

Google'd d15b and came up with this.

Valve cover appears reversed. ???

well , heres a little bit of knowledge for u if your getting into the honda world
USDM motors will always have the last letter of the motor accompanyed by a number of some sort.
in jdm land all the motors dont have a number on there
SO any search of a d15b will come up with a vtec motor that i belive is from a vti a motor never realesed in the states.
d15b1 or 2 on the other hand was released in the states a quick google search will come up with a list of honda motors hell ill do it for u.

I simply typed in " honda motor guide " in googles search engine
http://lonewolf-online.net/cars/honda/engine_guide/
heres the first thing that popped up.
good luck!

From that guide, it appears to be a 92HP D15B2.

It also looks like its due for a engine bay fire. look at how close the metal intake tube is to the pos battery terminal. one good jolt and it can ground out and make some serious melted **** under the hood. If you but it get it fixed ASAP

That Civic looks like it will need some serious help before it is even roadworthy. CRx Jimmy speaks the truth.

Good luck to you if you go with the project.

I'd buy it if I didn't already have 2.
Don't spend too much on that though.

yeah, i wouldn't pay $700 for that. the amount of work that would have to go into it... for $700 you should be able to find one with a decent, non-trashed interior and at least alittle paint on the exterior. tell him you'll take it for $250 and settle at $300 cause that about the most he should be able to get outta that thing anyway. how many miles are on the engine, does it burn alot of oil?

I would not buy that civic for $700.00. More like a $300.00 car, if that IMO.
It's just ragged to hell and probably needs a lot of work, not to mention it just looks horrible. I've seen much, much nicer $700.00 Civics in my time.

IMO I'd rather buy a really clean chassis Civic that needs something major like a clutch, tranny, or engine job because that's east stuff.

I am going to go against the flow a little and say that barring any damage unforseen on the drivers side, $700 isn't too bad of a deal for this car. The body looks straight, even though its primered or whatever. The drivers seat is the most F'd up drivers seat ive seen in a civic though, so you may factor that into cost. You may also take a tape measure with you, and measure from the center of the front wheel to the center of the back wheel on both sides, then compare the numbers to see if there is any major body damage/suspension damage. Something that cheap is at high risk for being a salvage car atleast once in its life.. run a carfax on it too if you can.

Its hard to say if i would buy it outright for $700, but you can always lowball them.. just say something about how you are going to have to buy a new front seat, and thats gonna cost at least $150-$200.. then offer them like $500 or $600..

Not even many low dollar 4-cylinder cars. Folks have snagged them all up around here since the gas prices shot up.

Anyways, I "may" offer him $500 and leave it at that. This would only be a temporary beater anyways until I sold off my "toy" car and bought a much nicer ($$) Honda.

That interior is something else though huh ?

Since you don't need help identifing the car anymore. I would definitely pass on that one man, its not worth 7 bills. Find a clean hatch with a blown motor or tranny. If it looks that bad from the outside who knows what going on the inside. Their is probably a wiring nightmare underneath the dash you don't even know about yet. I've seen it on too many modified rigged honda's.

I did a little 5 minute search on Dayton,Ohio craigslist for you and found a few hatches.
This one might be a gem, just need to email them for pictures. It was owned by a old lady.
