Would you guys think they're safe? Somebody whose done it maybe could check in?
Of course I'd want to know what kind of incidents they survived...but what price makes them a viable option for a cheapie build when the new set is 330? Looking at a set for 150. Stock LS. I'll be buying new bolts, so I guess around 210 total.
I know they go pretty fast in the classifieds, used and new.
Please advise a boost newb.

its a coin toss, they might be slightly bent, they might need honed because they have went out of round, or it might be a few other things.....or it might just be a good set of rods, who knows....its a game of chance with any used parts those.

Yeah, the more I think about it....I guess my build better not be that budget.
Should probably spring for the new ones.

yeah, you aren't talking about a huge price savings on them so probably a better idea to just spring for new ones

ive seen used rods put a hole in the block! the rod bolts snapped and BAM! it was a user on here, i think the conclusion was that the rod bolts had possibly stretched when in the previous car, eagle's are so cheap just buy them new, unless your prepaired to possilby have to have them honed and replace the rod bolts.

What's the saying?
Parts that wear together, stay together.
I personally am not a huge fan of putting used parts in my engine. Cam/Crankshafts maybe, but rods/pistons/etc is a no.

I decided to save $100 only because its a SOHC, and I have a set of vitaras ready right on top of a spare block. I lucked out, they were indeed hardly used, and a stretch-gauge didn't indicate the bolts were junk.
If I was planning on making 400+ whp or 8k+ rpm, it would be different.

I have seen a couple sest of used eagles that have had bad bushing on the small end of the rod plus like others are saying with the rod bolts i say bite the bullet and get new ones if those are the rods in your price range.

oh please, eagles a LONG time ago had a rod bolt issue, they switched to ARP's and have been fine ever since. I would run 600hp on them anyday and not worry about it, eagle makes good products.

Yeah...used rods generally leads to poor wrist pin fitment, so they end up needing rebushed and honed. I just recently took a chance on buying a used set and guess what....I just spent an extra 150.00 getting them repaired, so I have a used set of rods that cost more than new.
Buy new rods....period.

Best bet is to spend the extra $200ish but if you do buy the used then definitely put new rod bolts in it. You have no idea how many times they have been stretched/torqued before man or if someone actually overstretched them

Correct. I would never use anything used for internals.
