Default advice on running slicks for first time?

sorry if its in wrong section but i just picked up a pair of 22x8x15 M/T slicks. im going to the track on saturday and have never ran slicks before. im running a sohc turbo, right at 190whp/180tq. im also on the stock si tranny. im starting to get worried about breaking something. i just got them because i needed something to us besides my crappy kumho tires which i can only cut a 2.2 60ft.

I run those tires and launch at 6000rpms with the spray on and get 1.9 60ft

with a open diff, and allot of clutch slip. Don't just drop the clutch you could break

an axle or your tranny. Have fun

Basically as everyone was saying; Two weeks ago was my first time out on slicks. I launched at 7200, Preloaded with the ebrake, and slipped it out the hole. First time out was a 1.732 60ft with probably only 170-180whp.

Don't dump it, and come out high.

Bogging breaks parts, I'd rather spin and loose traction, then bog and break something.

Run more tire pressure than normal first couple of runs to get used to driving on slicks then lower to 8-12 lbs once you get the hang of them.

i would agree first time out i was on 12 lbs.. as i got used to it we lowered the PSI down.

Preload the hell out of the car.. Once you get a feel for it you should be good..

I would try 15-18lbs or more for the first time.

Yes you'll be fine. I was on a stock tranny, Open Diff. Each pass drop the tire pressure untill you see your MPH start dropping, once it drops. Don't let any more out

I also paid real close attention to my 60' and 330' to decide when to stop dropping pressure. I have made at least 50 passes on open diff with stock axles and no weight removed from the car and never broke anything yet (launching at 6500rpm) make sure you get both slicks hot in the burnout. my car is a handful with only one slick hot. good luck!

It really all dependson the driver if you are going to snap an axel or not...ive got friends that have low 10sec cars on stock axels and they have never broken any yet....and then ive seen people snap them on street tires...i dont know how youd break them on street tires but it happens!!! JUST DONT SIDE STEP OFF THE CLUTCH!!!

breaking things are just part of this game. fixing it and making it better is almost as fun as breaking it to me.

i never had any luck preloading like these other guys. i guess i never got the hang of it.

i use my 2 step and side step the clutch around 7-8k. that always works better for me. i do have a spool, and a pretty heavy duty clutch. im sure if i break anything it will be an axle..... i hope. i will post next friday and let you know what my 60ft times are at. (breaking in a new setup)

well things went okay on the wknd for my first time on slicks. the burnout wasnt bad at all e-brake up, get on the antilag for some boost then pop the clutch, wait till you see some smoke and the tires will want to pull you through, drop the ebrake ride it out for a bit, stop then stage.

the launch was the best part! grips like nothing, spun late in first, but just pedaled it so i wouldn't bog on the 1-2 shift. the rest of the run was not so hot, something happpened on the 2-3 shift and the car cut out... still trying to figure that one out.

i had my tires @ 13.5psi so they would spin, launching at 5k on 5lbs of boost, managed a 1.9 60ft and a 8.4 @ 79mph(1/8)

only got one run in because of the issues

still have some good room to grow with the 60ft, but i'll ease it there with some lower psi in the tires and a higher launch.
