Default 1998 Honda Civic Auto, CEL Codes, P0700, and P1706, Please Help.

I have a huge problem and I would really love some help resolving this issue.

I know that a P0700 code is thrown anytime there is an issue with the Automatic Transmission, its like a generic code that following a second more problem specific code.
At least that was I was able to deduce after sitting and Googeling for a few hours. I maybe wrong, if I am please tell me.

So this problem specific code p1706, is eluding me, I cant find anything specific on it. Other than "Automatic Transaxel Issue"

Somebody please help me figure this out, I will get you back in anyway that I can.

I dont want to have to replace her transmission, its shifts very smooth, and I have a hard time believing that its the transmission its self that is bad. If I am wrong here, and its only a matter of time before the transmission goes, please let me know.

Ok so I looked around a little and found this.

P1706 Open in Transmission Range Switch Circuit

what does this mean?

I found this, but I am not sure what to make of it.

In the auto transmission a transaxle is a huge deal. If you are shifting smooth then I can wager the only reason the CEL light is on is because you need to change the transaxle fluid and filter - I think they do that in shops when you ask for a transmission flush but you may need to be specific. If your transaxle was on its way out your car wouldn't be doing well at all. Look into it.

This is what transaxle means

Transaxle
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation, search
A transaxle, in the automotive field, is a component that combines the functionality of the transmission, the differential and the drive axle into one integrated assembly. Transaxles are near universal in all automobile configurations that have the engine placed at the same end of the car as the driven wheels: the front wheel drive, rear-engined and mid-engined arrangements.

Thanks for your input man, but I already had a full flush and filter change no less than a month ago, this really doesn't help me out.

I am just trying to figure out what the code p1706 means, and what the application for repair would be.

Thanks!

Back from the dead with a possible solution for those that have this issue. Not saying that what i did is a for sure fix, but it has worked for me, and i don't have CEL anymore. My obd2 scanner would give me code p1706 and i needed to clear it so i can get the car smogged. I just bought the car with a busted auto trans, and replaced it to turn around and dd/sell. Anyway, this is what i did. Take your center console apart and remove the shifter plate. It is held by two screws. Under that you will see a white plug/box held on by two 10mm nuts. Loosen and push it forward and retighten. Hopefully this works for you as it did for me.

that code is exactly what it says it is. The range switch under the gear shifter indicator panel. Basically that switch indicates what gear your in by the shifter itself and on the dash. Water spilt from a cup in holder down under shift panel and my ECM threw both P0700 and p1706 causing my TCM to signal the ECM and my ride went in to limp mode. I let the switch dry out , reset my ECM and limp mode went away and all is good again. Start with that switch. Hopefully this helps you.
