Clutch Problems - Extremely Frustrated
I have a 98 EL (= Civic EX) with a D16Y8. Everything is bone stock. I replaced the clutch with an OEM replacement from Exedy (Daikin) clutch kit. After I picked up the car, I noticed that the clutch pedal would go down 1/2 to 3/4 of the way down without any pressure. I took it back to the mechanic and had the system bled again. The problem persisted. So, I changed the master and slave cylinders with original parts. The problem still exists. There are no leaks and no air in the system. Does anyone have any ideas? The problem is intermittent.
Clutch replacement is one of the things I hate the most. If your car was running a stiffer than stock pressure plate (and you didn't know it ). You replaced it with a stock set up the pedal will feel softer. This is due to the number and stiffness of finger springs on the pressure plate. Some times the only way to know what you have is to get a hold of your used pressure plate and see if you can find any info on it. Good luck
Thanks for your reply.
The clutch that was replaced was the original clutch. It was quite soft. However, it always had pressure throughout the entire range of motion. With the new clutch, there are times when there is absolutely no pressure for 1/2 - 3/4 of the motion and then pressure at the very end. That is why initially I thought that there was air in the system. However, the system has been bled several times and there are absolutely no leaks.

Ordered the Russell Performance steel braided clutch line hose. It runs between the 2 hard lines. Hopefully, this will make a difference.
I just put the same clutch kit on my car and it's already slipping. I originally thought the machine shop just ground too much off the flywheel, but now I'm wondering if Daikin OEM clutches are just crap.
However, I have no problem with pedal feel. I have pressure the whole way down after I bled it ONCE. Maybe they just don't know how to bleed it correctly? You can do it yourself with the bleeder on the slave cylinder, it's quite simple. Open bleeder, push pedal, close bleeder, pull back pedal, add fluid... repeat

hey the one problem with honda slaves is the bleeder is sometimes to low, what you have to do is get the bleeder valve higher then what it is, We use a machine that sucks the air out of the line so it makes sure that there is a constant psi. so ask the shop if they know how to do that and try that.
Snap-on usally sells this equipment or Mac, Macco...tool companys in general have this tool.
hopefully this works for you had the same problem with my boys ek he went from hydro to cable and the bleeder was to low and did this and was back to normal.
good luck

Wow ok i'll clear everything up with this one post. After doing a clutch and pressure plate swap, you have to re-adjust the clutch pedal. I advise getting a Honda Factory Service Manual. It has all the steps and procedures for doing this. The clutch pedal itsself has an adjustment on it where the rod goes through to the clutch master cylinder. You can adjust that and bring that pedal engaugement up closer to the top.

Wow, I'm seeing more and more people have complaints about the Daikin OEM. I've bled the system myself. The mechanic did it 4 times - once after the slave cylinder, master cylinder, etc. were replaced.
Have you figured out the problem with your slipping?

Thanks for the reply. We used the Snap-on tool that sucks out the air while bleeding. Also, the system has been bled 4 times. I'm quite sure that there is no air in the system.

When the clutch is working normally, the engagement point is at the stock level. However, it is only during the loss of pressure does the engagement point drop to a lower level. At this point, the mechanic and I feel that we have a hydraulic issue not one with a clutch pedal issue since the engagement point is at the normal level 95% of the time.

Are there any others having complaints about the Daikin OEM clutch? Is there anyone with complaints about the Exedy Stage 1 clutch? If this problem persists, I am thinking of using the Stage 1 kit. How is the pedal feel with the Stage 1? Any stiffer? Thanks...
