Default 1997 Honda Civic catalytic converter

I gutted my catalytic converter as a cheap alternative to a test pipe. I am having a fuel economy problem and believe it is because my O2 sensor is detecting "dirty air" yet my check engine light is not coming on.

Is there something to trick the O2 sensor in the catalytic converter? or what? Is there any other common issues that affect fuel economy that i can check?

I find it hard to believe that you gutted out an obd2 cat and didn't throw the infamous "ineficient catalyst" code.

so is there a fix for this other than a new cat? or is their any other common reasons for a lack of fuel efficiency?
