We parked my mother inlaws accord in about 1998 because her driving was getting bad. A week ago, after 10 years parked, I bought a battery and cranked the car up. Surprising was that it ran fairly well, even on old gas...

Anyhow, after a trst drive, the following problems became apparant.

1) cannot shift from park to drive with foot on the brake. Can bypass safety lock with a key in the shift console.

2) made a rapid clicking from under the dash, brake lights stuck on.

3) transmission will not shift automatic, seems to be stuck in 3'ed or 4th.
will shift manually down a gear, but not low.

4) the brake light is stuck on.
As I understand, there is a computer which controls the transmission? Does this sound as if the problem can be related to the computer? I am certinly no wizzard with car mechanics.

And last, the car seemed ,as I recall, to run as it should when parked. It has 55k miles on it, mint in appearence. Would love to pass this car down to my son.

As far as the 3rd or 4th gear issue, it may need a new computer for the transmission. It is located under the passenger side's carpet. Sometimes water may leak on the computer and corrode the wires and burn out that computer. I think it is called a TCM or TCU. If you google "accord transmission computer" You will see instructions and pictures of its location for replacement. But first, inspect that TCU and it's wires. It's a plug-n-play module.
