Wierd Overheating Issue
Ill try to be as detailed as possible.
I have a 1991 Honda Accord DX 5 spd 2.2. I bought the car about 2 weeks ago. The car overheats when the RPM is low. Here are the details of what I have done and what I know.
- While driving the car if you are giving it gas it tends to do fine.
- I first noticed it getting hot when I would pull into a drive way and just sit at an idle the temperature would get VERY close to the red.
- If you are sitting at an idle and you give the car gas in neutral while its hot it will quickly start to cool down.
- Driving down the highway if I push in the clutch the temperature will start to go up and when I let off the clutch and give it gas it will drop the temp.
- The fan is working fine.
- I have replaced the Thermastat.
- Its not low on coolant nor is it losing any.
- I did "bleed" the radiator or whatever thats called to get the air out.
- The previous owner said he had the radiator replaced a while back.
- The car runs fine otherwise. No wanter/coolant in oil, starts fine idles fine for its age.
The last thing I know to do is water pump but I wont do it since its messing with timing and it will cost me about $350 to have it done and I don't want to waste the money if someone knows something better.

Wow, I've never heard of this problem before.
I'd have to guess water pump, it's the only thing that would be RPM dependent, and also the only thing you haven't replaced.
I'm just guessing here though.

sorry to let you down.....but thats the root cause.

Well man you're not alone in this on. I'll make a list of all I've replaced so far :
- thermostat
- water pump & timming kit
- all the cooling hoses
- temp sending unit
- fan temp sending unit
- head gasket with all that goes with it
Also I've even made my fans turn once the car starts.......Im really going crazy please help anyone. By the way the car runs better than ever and there are no codes to check. But still once I pull over or come to a stop the car starts to overheat
