Default Success Stories From Those Who Started Out Big

I've been looking into getting a sport bike for a while now and have come to the conclusion that the smartest idea is to start small with an older 250 ..i just wanted to hear from any members that may have started with something in the newer 600cc range (R6, GSXR600, 600F4i, etc) and beat the odds...thanks

"knocking on wood" started out on a 600, daily drove to school 30 miles round trip for the past 10 months and have not gotten into any trouble or gotten myself into trouble. This was my first bike ever, just finished the msf course so I could get my license. It was slightly useful in my situation.

I started on a 900 RR. A bike is only as fast as you twist the wrist. Since then i have owned 3 gsxr's, 2 900RR's, a zx-7, and now a 2002 R1.

i started with a '98 zx-9r without ever getting into trouble for the 11 months i owned it... gotta agree with freaker though, it only goes as fast as u twist it.... have a tl1000r now and its a monster.... the way i see it, if u can ride a bike, then [IMG][/IMG] u can start with a 600, but its all ur choice man... i just think 250 are a waste cuz u will get tired of it real fast.... my .02

no success story here. my buddy started out on a 929 erion edition - looped it and now has a 954. is he a better rider?? nope, just has a nice bike.

never underestimate a rider on a 250... i see riders that move up to bigger bikes but keep their 250's for the track. plus you'll learn faster with a smaller bike you can throw around with ease.

more embarrasing if ya got a liter bike and get smoked by someone on a two-fiddy

I started with ZX11. 1100CC Ninja. Thats pretty impressive. Now it took me a while to get used to the bike and the speeds the bike can easily achieve. My best friend started on a Hayabusa andhe was doign good till recently.... Anyhow big bikes are for crazy people. Small bikes are for tricks. pick what would suit you best.

I think the most capable, controlled riders I know started out in the dirt on 125s and 250s...

It'd be nice to see you live a while, but one of your responses in another forum pissed me off, and I can't seem to understand why 99% of your posts end in ????

some dont even have any writing.... just a bunch of F'ing

whats up with that?

I know a guy that started out with a ZX11 too. He doesn't ride anymore, but I just talked to him and he's okay...just barely though. He told me about some of the stupid **** he did on that thing at 140+, mostly cuz he was a teenager and a new rider and it amazed me he's still alive. I mean I'm glad he's around and all - but I would recommend starting off with a 600 at most, preferably smaller.

get a 600. unless 160-170mph is too slow for you then get a 750 so you can go 10-15 mph faster. . . woohoo. i wouldn't get a 250 unless i had another bike on the side. they are fun and cheap on gas, but you'll get sick of it in less than a year. ride before you buy!

Started on a 500cc single Cylinder 22hp Honda FT500 ASCOT. Great learning bike and i can still look foreward to buying a new bike cause it will be quite an improvement from the FT. If you start on a Busa, what do you have to look foreward to?

In 1980 I started out on a Kawasaki 750 LTD, 1st thing I did was but engine guard on the front frame. In 1980 the tires were skinny little ***** compared to now. The bike was a good teacher, by starting with the cruiser LTD I could not push the way I could or would have tried on another bike. I was experiminting braking in the rain at 10 mph I slammed on the front brake and slid the bike on it's right side. The engine guard took the beating and my *** but I was physically o.k. I learned a lot about braking that day. In June of 81 I was riding in the right lane of a 4 lane road there was a light up ahead with a car in the L lane waiting to make Left turn (signal and everything) when I was 75 feet from him, he decided to make a right turn without looking. he hit my Left rear shock only because i speeded up. I realized a week later that if i had not speeded up he would have caught the front wheel or engine with my leg somewhere in between. Again I learned from stupidity. The bike was fixed up and his insurance paid for it all. 3 weeks later it was stolen at 8:00p.m. at night. I moved on to sport bikes then a GPZ550 which was nice but i did not like the handling or the ergos on it. But in 1984 I bought a new Honda VF500, that was a bike that you could sport ride thru corners like a pro. That bike never hit the ground in 5 years of riding, the only thing that gave me a problem was the fork seals and battery. I stopped riding in 1989, because my 1st wife hated bikes. I know have 2001 Honda 929RR it's a year old on Aug 9th and I have 800 miles on it. The new sport bikes are great but not very forgiving, they encourage fast riding, but there is a fine line between a good fun ride and losing control. I have over 35,000 miles on riding bikes and still have never wheelied one. That fine line in 1980 on the street was in the 25-50 mph range it was easier to slide or lose control at those speeds. Todays bike the line is probably 40-80 because of the tires and the bikes themselves. The thing is fall off your bike at 25 mph and something really bad happening to you is a much slimmer chance than at 60. (which is the speed i see most people riding sport bike on the streets these days.) I have know people who were killed at 25mph at intersections (shitty helmet) So it's not really speed that kills but the overconfirdence that the new bikes give you that gets you into trouble.
