Default B20/DX alternator/pulley change?

My B20 is coming without the alternator, so can I use my 96 DX alternator on a B20z? I thought I heard that I would have to change the crank pulley to a LS one to avoid burning up the alternator.

I'm going to have the same problem man. Mine has no starter or alternator...it'd be nice to know what fits!

I called the yard in NE that sold me the motor, and they have a starter for $55 shipped, from a 98 with 60k..so i picked that up.. i didn't even think to ask them about the crank pulley since i didn't know which to get...
anyway, i need to look at a b20 alternator and compare the pulley to my dx. maybe i can just swap the alternator pulley and use a b20 crank pulley, assuming the two alternator pulleys ARE different... help!

oh btw, i think i scored pretty good on the motor...from a 2001 crv, 1600 miles, looks brand spankin new...was $1025 shipped. Officially they sold it for $950 with $75 shipping and handling, nothing broken, oh wait, except one little vacuum port on the manifold..came with intake, exhaust, complete harness, minus alternator, p/s (dont need it anyway), starter and crank pulley. they were confused why i was asking what it came with on the phone...they said "Are you repairing a broke car?"....uh no.. "Well I've heard of people swapping integra motors into civics"
heh...uhh yeah...they were pretty cool, all in all. It arrived in 6 days.
The place is All Foreign Auto and TRuck Salvage in Omaha,NE.

Sounds like a good buy. If you need a B20 crank pulley, IM me, I have one.

well, i understand the crv pulley is bigger, so it would make the accessories spin faster yes? Causing more friction?

I'll find out tomorrow i guess when my engine shows up.

the B20B crank pully is MASSIVE!

like almost twice as heavy as hte B16 one and much bigger diameter,

so more like an 'overdrive' pully!

t..

PS you can use any b series pully.

fit, yes, ok, but will the ls pulley on the b20 will be fine for the dampening/motor longevity? didn't seem clear to me...

i'd say the heavier pulley is there for a reason. Perhaps the heavier pistons need more counterweight. Maybe it IS overkill tho.

I measured the pulley on my b20 and its about 6 1/4 inches in dia. My ls one looks to be about just under 5ish (in car measurement). Not THAT big a difference, so maybe my b20 isn't from the crv. Somwone said that the crv pulley is twice the ls size...?

I think he said "it felt twice as heavy." If you have the B20 alternator on there, can you measure that pulley, so I can compare to my DX alternator pulley?

i was actually thinking back to a different post where a different boy commented on the huge size of a crv pulley.

I'm actually gonna do the swap early next week, so i will weigh each pulley separely an measure the dia. exactly. I plan to take pics of the whole ordeal, so i can put it all a fancy website.

sorry, the stinkers yanked the alternator and even the distributor on me. Left the useless a/c compressor tho (and the ps pump at least). I certainly hope that the two alt pulleys are the same or else the ls crank pulley will be going on (unless the adjustment can counter the slack or lack of)

well, i just remembered i have a '92 dx (auto...if there's a diff) crank pulley in my wood shed. I just measured it and its exactly 6 1/4" at its biggest dia. The crv pulley i have is exactly 6.5". So you might be able to take out the slack if you use your dx alt. The dx pulley felt really light tho, and the crv pulley, i'll weigh tomorrow when i yank it. The ls pulley will have to wait till next week for official measurements when i pull it.

Each individual belt surface on the pulleys may respectively differ tho...?

I'll figure out more tomorrow, i have to go to the DQ now.
