MPFI swap... getting 5k idle and smoke out of the exhaust
Sorry to start this on a new topic, but I don't think too many people are paying attention to my old one. Any one interested in a history can go to https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=228632
Well, I've got My new TPS and Installed it (Thanks Spaceballs for getting it to me so fast) but my car is still idling at 5000 rpm and smoking up the place. Being an old Chevy V-8 guy, I figured "vaccum leak"
Feeling around on the back side of the manifold, I found what felt like a large vaccum port. Not seeing any hose to plug into it, I plugged the port. Started the motor... up to 5k and a whistling noise! No codes on the ECU.
Went to my local dealer and checked out their manuals and found out it wasn't a vaccum port, but a coolant port on the Electronic air control valve (#10 in photo below.) I've got everything plumbed properly now... but still idling @ 5k and "whistling" I unplugged the EACV and the Idle dropped down and started bouncing between 600-1500 with no throtle responce. after running like this for 10-15 seconds, the ecu understandably threw a code 14. I shut it down and quit for the night.
Would not having coolant running through the EACV make it go bad?? or did I just get a bad one with this manifold? Most of the gaskets and seals were dried out and leaking, I had to replace most of them on this mani. I'm asumming that the whistling is comming from this part, but I'm afraid to run the engine long enough to find out for sure.
So, looks like I'm buying a new EACV for $125.00, unless somebody can think of something else that could be doing this to me.
On a side note, my Fast Idle Solenoid (#9 in photo below) is not connected electrically, but the vaccum line is connected. There was a thread about this a few weeks ago and it was said that this is allright. Otherwise everything is connected properly.

coolant does not matter in the throttle body lines,or eavc.i never had a problem.if its whistling does it sound like a intake leak?.i came across this problem befor and i cant remember what it was.if you unplug the eavc and while it runs spray some carb cleaner around the gaskets, intake manifold, throttle body gasket if theres a leak it will rev up.did you put on new gaskets? what all did you do?
sounds like a gasket problem on your TB or intake mani and its leaking badly. Are you sure all the bolts are tourqed on both............
TB and Intake both have new gaskets.... wait a minute, I couldn't get a hold of a tb gasket so I made my own out of paper gasket material (the auto parts guy swore it was the same stuff), maybe i miss-cut it. I'll get a new one and put it on tommorow...
So you guys think a vacum leak would go back to normal (sort of) idle when I unplug my EACV? well, it's a heck of a lot cheaper than a new EACV, so I'll give it a shot.
The "whistling" noise didn't start until I plugged that coolant line, If it is the TB gasket, I must've bumped the TB or something. accualy, the sound is similar to a belt squeal.

ThumpU, thought I was the only GM guy on here, hehe. Anywhos, to find a vac. leak try spraying the mating surfaces of the intake tract with Carb/choke cleaner or throttle body cleaner. If the idle changes suddenly you've found your leak.

let me know if you figure anything out...just did the same thing in my crx dx.
btw---where did you get that pic from?
btw---where did you get that pic from?
Also make sure you clean the surfaces good and not leave any of the old gasket still there. I changed my TB gasket and forgot a small piece of the old gasket on the mating surface, and I had the whistle. Found the piece, removed it (it was stuck pretty good), re-installed the gasket, torque to specs, and walah!
this may be silly, but did you swap the 2 outside wires on the TPS sensor? The DPFI and the MPFI are wired opposite, so if you forgot do do this the computer would think the car is at WOT when it is idling.

thanks for all the help guys, I'll let you know tonight what the next problem is.
when i find teh portable dyno guy at teh trakc ill dyno it but i have seen it yet...
u do need coolant running thru the eacv try and bleed ur coolant of air bubbles by burping it if u know how....i happen to have owned a few F bodies myself....and try ur old eacv from the dx intake mani and make sure u use the coolant lines and is teh eacv mounted right? there sounds like a vacume leak then there probably is

OK I'm on the road!!!!!!!!!!!
I forgot to mention that the smoke I was seeing was white... some of you may know where this is going.
The problem was that the brace that holds the back side of the mani was holding it too high! it wasn't allowing the bottom 3 bolts of the mani to seat completely. and the white smoke was from water and antifreeze getting into #4 cylinder.
So, I removed the mani, banged on that bracket to get it down a little, bolted the mani back on, and we're set. I still need to put another new gasket on there, it's not compleately sealed. There's still a slight whistle at certain rpms, and Idle is 2000 cold, and bounces from 500-1500 warm (up and down, up and down), but I think I've got It taken care of now.
Thanks a lot for all your help guys!!! I hope others can read this and learn from my mistakes. I think I'll leave the retard avatar up until I redeem myself

Yea, I know I said I was done but......
I replaced the gaskets (both the tb and the mani gasket) still had a surging idle, so I moved the vaccum line on the dashpot to where it is in the pic below (it was on the other fitting) surge is gone.
Now my only problem (if it even is a problem) is I'm still getting a slight whistle when I'm driving and I push the accelerator about 1/4 of the way down. It doesn't have anything to do with vehicle speed or engine speed, just how far open the tb is. It doesnt do it when I'm standing still, only when there is a load on the engine.
Has anyone experienced this? Is it anything to worry about? I'm pretty sure I've got all of the leaks sealed up, and it doesn't seam to affect the performance any.
Other than that, and the fact that this new intake is WAY TOO LOUD!!!! (It's resonating through the cabin), I'm loving the swap
