Default two stereos?

I have a '97 LX civic. I recently bought and installed the factory stereo, and it also has the slave CD player in the lower dash. The CD player just tries to read my CD's, and then just spits them out after a few seconds, so mostly I listen to my Zune via headphones while I drive. Now that you have the background, my questions are as follows:

1. Is it true that all I need to do to get keyless entry is to buy a keyfob and program it through the factory stereo?

2. Can I unhook the slave CD player and put an aftermarket player in its place (perhaps a deck that has an mP3/aux input), while leaving the factory radio in place for the keyless entry ?

3. Has anyone used a PIE hon-aux converter with the ZNCBLPAK? If so how is the sound quality?

Well heres answer to question #2, if you want to keep your factory keyless or the option of factory keyless you will need to get a harness that basically Ts off to supply power to the factory radio to keep the keyless alive and gives an aftermarket radio everything it needs. Metra makes one part number 70-1720t. For keyless entry I would ditch the idea of a using your ten year old factory unit and go get a decent radio with mp3 aux input, theres a ton of them out there.

yeah you can put your eftermarket radio down there but like he said you will need to supply power to the stock unit.

Am I the only one that sees the danger in the fact that he/she is driving with headphones in his/her ears. Please stop doing this it is really unsafe. everyone is wright about how to wire your sterio in and keep keyless entry.

Its perfectly legal as long as you have only one earphone in. Its the same thing as some of the hands free driving phones.

Ok, thanks all for the comments, very helpful. But listen, if I change out the main deck, then the slave cd player is just a worthless gadget taking up space in my lower dash...exactly what I'm trying to avoid here. If I change my main deck, I may also lose keyless (right?). Here's the deal with keyless...I'm not even sure it's a possibility yet. Keyfobs are a dime a dozen on ebay, so I figured I'd buy one and see if it can be programmed to my 97 LX. Hopefully I can. Then I figured, hey, my CD player doesn't work, I'll take it out and plug the hole with something cool, and that way if I get an aftermarket player, I could maybe keep my keyless too. Am I being rediculous about the keyless entry here? Is there something way better I could do with that cd player slot?

P.S. I'm kinda noob, and I just took my Honda out of a 6 year storage-unit hibernation, so, yeah I really don't know what's available to me yet.

what kind of freaky custom stuff have you guys seen in dashes? I saw a rear-view camera installed in the change cubby that is next to the stereo, pretty cool, but tiny.

your actually supposed to tuck the stock stereo behind the dash and leave i believe its green connector(security or keyless entry) plugged in also i could be wrong on the color but it says what each connector is on the back so just read to make sure you leave the security connector plugged in then get a wiring harness and a head unit and that replaces the open hole in the dash then you take out the factory cd player at the bottom(it connects to back of factory unit so unplug that aswell) and just pull the hole cd player out you can get a little tray thing that will take place of that which im sure you can get on ebay for like 15 bucks

you could remove the factory stereo and replace it with a aftermaket deck. then ditch the factory wireless and just wire it to your alarm. if you don't have one, get one?

if you're looking for keyless entry and something decent to play toons with, that seems like the easiest solution. oh and get a pocket for the extra hole.

a pocket?! That's a total waste. I'm glad to know that I can still have the keyless without the crappy stock stereo but THE LAST thing I want is some crappy pocket.

Any other suggestions?

Not really sure why you think a factory pocket is crappy, the majority of the 96-98 civics came with a lower pocket. You can put an aftermarket radio down there in the lower pocket location without too much trouble. You could get a factory block-off plate for the top, I have seen them in a carbon finish and they looking pretty nice. Either way get an alarm to take care of your keyless.
