Grouchy First Gear
Have any other Teg owners here ever noticed that first gear doesn't always go in easily from a stop? Particularly when the gearbox is cold? Sometimes I have to try two or three times to get it to go. In case you're wondering - yes, I know how to operate a manual tranny; been at it for years.
BTW, I have a 98 RS w/ 58k on the clock. I drive mostly highway miles. I have fresh (only 8 to 10k old) gearbox lube (Redline MTL) but got the same problem with the Honda lube. TIA

Yeah, I do have a short shifter (forgot to mention it
). No difference either way, like you said.
I know that reverse is not synchronized...is it possible that first isn't either?

first and reverse are both hard to get into.....if it wont go into either just keep aplying pressure on it to go in and slllllllloooowwwly let out the clutch and it will go in.
I am not exactly sure what it does, but my dad always pulls in into second then straight up to first when he drives a stick. (from a stop that is) I can ask him what that is for tomorrow...

I had this problem too, But im not sure, and i dont want to sound like a dumb ***, but i think it has something to do with the syncros (sp). I usually take the clutch out completely, then back in and try again, it works for both reverse and first.
well, i think it may be some sort of lock out, have you ever tried putting you car into first at any speed above 20? ain't happenin'. all I have to do is release the clutch, the depress the clutch and it'll go in gear. but I dunno if that's what it is. if first wasn't sync'd you wouldn't be able to put it in gear if you were rolling backwards w/o some grindage
i've looked into this a bit.
there was someone somewhere who claimed to have cut the "block" that makes it so hard.

otherwise, the 2 to 1 trick or revving it up to anywhere from 4k to 6k will get it to go in (and clutch feathering...but be careful)

it's normal.
Reverse isn't synchronized, that's why sometimes it's hard to get it in gear (also why it makes that whirring noise). You can double clutch or shift into another gear to stop the shafts from spinning or line them up better, then back into reverse.
I'm not tranny guru but that's the gist of it.
I can't recall if first gear is also straight cut, but just being such a low gear, it's more difficult to engage. The same trick with double clutching helps it engage much smoother if you ever notice resistance. Rev matching also helps if you're at a crawl, say ~5mph. Just don't force it...that's ouch.

Cool, it's nice to know I'm not the only one.
I do double-clutch (like I should) when first gives me trouble...seems to work pretty well. Maybe that's what Vin was talking about.
I have heard something about a lockout on first, too. I don't see why they wouldn't just make it straight cut, but oh well - Honda's engineers probably know more about their cars than I do.

I always had problems getting into 1st, sometimes even when at a dead stop. I used to always double clutch 1st and reverse. But then I noticed that if I went down into 2nd then into 1st it always slid right into 1st without any problems. Dunno why, maybe things were lined up better when coming from 2nd? But try that.
The 2-1 trick worked fine in my ten year old Tercel (but not so well in the Teg)...I don't think the gearbox hung up anywhere near as easily as the Teg.
