Hi I was just wondering if a 95 DOHC salvaged del sol is worth $2200. It has 150k miles on the engine and there is a minor dent on the quarter panel, but besides that, all the exterior and interior is fine. Do you guys think this is a good buy? Even a simple yes or no answer would work for me . Thanks

all i have to say is check the frame for inperfections. But yes, i would buy it.

As in, salvage title? If it's a salvage title, you better make sure you can get a rebuilt title for it easily. Also, if it's a salvage title, I sure as heck wouldn't pay $2,200 for it. You could have difficulties registering it and insuring it.

I know in FL you cannot register a salvage title car. It has to go thru an inspection and documented rebuild process in order to be eligible for a rebuilt title. Not cheap.

I'd pay $700 for it, maybe, knowing it's a salvage title.

 

^ yikes, that's harsh. Salvage title in CA isn't really a big deal, AFAIK there's a simple inspection and then you get kind of screwed on insurance.

Salvage title roughly halves the value of the car. So is it a good deal? Not really. I've seen super clean Si's go for around $3k, and GSR swapped Sol's going for $4k. I wouldn't pay $2k for this car for two reasons:

1. the VTEC is the fattest and heaviest. I'd rather drive a lighter, better MPG Si.
2. The del Sol is the black sheep in the Honda community. It's hard enough to sell a nice, clean title del Sol...so good luck getting your investment back on a salvage title.

If you want a cheap, semi-quick car, offer $2000 and be aware of what you need to do to register/insure a salvage title car. Otherwise, I recommend you keep looking.

If it's actually a "prior salvage" title, meaning it's already been inspected, that is a pretty good deal. A couple years ago, I sold my wife's 1995 Del slo VTEC for 4500. It was a pretty clean car but it did have a prior salvage title. Drove fine. As long as the car drives well, I think you would be doing pretty good for 2200. They insure and tag them just like you do a regular car in Missouri. If you have to get it inspected, I'd tell the person that has the car to do it for you if you aren't comfortable doing it. In MO, you just need a 551 form and all of the receipts for any work performed to make the car road worthy again.

Why does it have a salvage title? Sometimes, these cars are totalled by the insurance company because the cost to fix vs. book value of the car. If it hasn't been in a major accident, AND you won't have a hassle getting it insured, it might be ok. I'd definitely do my research (ask why and carfax) to get a accurate history of the car, then offer less for it.

 

I've decided not to get the del sol and will keep on looking because it'll probably be too problematic, as there are too many factors involved. If you guys have any del sols around CA for sale feel free to pm me. Thanks for all the opinions.

Yup, agreed.

We have the same **** in NY, gotta go through and get it reinspected by the state for a rebuilt title. Salvage is bad - but find out a few things, like in NY you can get a salvage title b/c the car was a theft recovery, or stuff like that, so find out the condition under which it was declared totaled. Also, usually it means frame damage was done, check if any was. I've seen my fair share of salvage cars [freak] people, it's not a great game to play, but I've seen a lot that had trouble passing inspection. Make sure it'll pass the salvage inspection if it doesn't have a title already, if it does have a title already make sure it runs fine and all that, and then maybe 1500 or so is a good price for it.

Salvage generally = bad.

USUALLY it's bad, There are some cases where it isn't, like with my EJ1 where I hit a deer and totaled it, bought it back, had it repaired, sold it to a friend, and he put 17,000 miles on it in a year and is selling it to his girlfriend's mom and never had a single problem with it except a bad CV boot (WHYYYYYYY DID I SELL THAT CAR????).

 

some areas that del sols are a bit sparce (like all hondas around here it seems) so it might not be too bad just depends on where your located.
I know around here you cant get even a clean base model for less that 3,500 bucks

 

well my buddy just got a 95 del sol for 4500 with 210k on it and excellent condition but it only has a slow *** D15, I bought my honda civic for only 2000 but it had 240k on it and thats to many miles and it has a little bit of rust on the rear corner panel but other then that its a clean car ill have pics on when i learn more about the the site since im a noob, So yea it sounds like a good deal 2200 for DOHC vtech del sol, id buy it.

 

the b16a3 motor n tranny alone will fetch 2k, of course its a good deal!
