How many people here actually road race?
By that I mean actual wheel to wheel competition organized by a major sanctioning body.
Solo 2, Solo 1, Solo Trials, lap days and driving schools don't count.

The cost of the safety stuff was pretty damn high for me. Then again, I was able to "shape up" by cutting my eating habits in half
"Safety Stuff" has absolutely nothing to do with licensing. The cost of building a race car can be prohibitive, I agree, but the cost of getting a license? No.

Well you have to attend acredited schools which makes cost somewhat of an issue if you're not sure you want to take the plunge.

You are incorrect, Dave. NASA will not allow one to be observed, ie: attempt to obtain a license, without having ALL of the required safety equipment IN PLACE AT THE TIME OF OBSERVATION. If you plan to do the ECHC, be ready for this fact.
Yeah getting into Club Racing is expensive. The liscensing alone is almost prohibitive.
huh? how do you figure?

The ones listed on the SCCAs website all charge over $1000 for a weekend school and that's if you bring your own car. Even the local school here in Denver (Go4it racing) charges 300 a day plus any track fees and of course your own car.
Maybe there's a cheaper way I don't know about?
And I don't plan to do ECHC, a friend does, we're bringing up his car, and he's a SCCA licensed driver so he doesn't have to do NASA schools to get his NASA license.

Honda-Challenge is a cool *** idea, but it doesn't interest me enough because of the drive I'd have to make for each race.. that would suck ***
SCCA Driving schools. There's one this weekend at Daytona. $130. The new madrevs IT7 co-driver is finishing up his license there. Two SCCA schools = ~$260. Now if you don't pass them or don't get 6 hours of time in two events, then you'd need a third.. but...

cable clutch ownz you......especially with the 80 shot in the glovebox that you didn't even see
I kind of figured there had to be a cheaper way. I'm sure the SCCA likes to support the schools that sponser them so they don't advertise alternate methods as much
Like others have said, road racing is a relatively expensive hobby. However there are still inexpensive ways of doing it. For about $5000, you can build a decent Spec Miata race car. Spread the amount and build time over a summer or a year and it won't be as hard on the wallet. When you are done, the cost will be similar to what it would cost to upgrade an Integra with a super charger and Mugen goodies such suspension/brakes.
Answering the original question, I plan to start road racing in September. My race car is still under construction.
