anyone have any opinions on commuter type duty for a 'tard? unstable at 70mph? buzzy on the freeway? what's the gas mileage like for thumpers?
not gonna commute on it, but it would be nice for medium range errand running, plus fun to ride the crap out of at grange.
thanks!

If you're going to see lots of highway action, it's best to go with a bigbore SM or Dualsport...650's and the such. But since you're not planning on using it to commute, a midbore (like 400's) would be a nice tradeoff between agility and power.
The 650's are better for long rides, but since they're heavier they don't are as good as their smaller siblings on the track or twisties.
If you're going to use it on the street though, I would go for something like an XR400, Husky 610SMR...something more street oriented than a full on dirt bike that has a more delicate maintenance schedule and don't like sustained speeds on the highway.

a friend swears by his husky 610smr, but i'm not sure i want to spend that kind of money atm. i think i could live with riding a DRZ400 up to ACH and around town on the weekends.
anyway, i'm contemplating a variety of streetbikes, all of which are screaming "BAD IDEA" to me

A DRZ400SM is a great "all-around" bike.
What about an older, used 610SMR?
Or you could search around Supermoto forums for bikes on sale...there's always good deals going on, you could ****** an already converted bike with tons of mods for a fraction of the cost.

Finding a converted one is sketchy in CA - if the bike did not start out as street-legal, it's possible that your registration will get yanked.
Finding one that's street-legal from the manufacturer is nice, but [freak] they're expensive. And heavier.
But since you're a baller, I'd say that Ferrari motard might be a good fit for ya.
When are you hitting up Grange? I have to admit .... the motard bug is coming back.

While I have never done it, I have seen quite a few people make life on dual p's... that being said, I think a Motard might be to highly strung for daily life in my book, but it boils down to personal preference and you ability to endure torture

Yeah, i wouldn't want to commute on it, but say if i have to make a weekend trip to the Orange Curtain, or to the Wessyde, i don't want to do it in my truck if i don't have to.
Right now, it's either DRZ400 vs Speed Triple 1050 vs Metropolitan 50

i think i'd go with an 07 because i don't like the new graphics package. that's another option too, along with the street triple.
then again, there's a pair of clean vintage RD's in my area right now for cheap...

Or just show up at an open trackday when some SCS or SBN guys go. I'm sure they won't mind - especially when you offer food.

As does every other drz owner. They are great bikes and the SM's are a blast in the twisties, heck even my S is so much fun on backroads.
Picked mine up for 2400 with 4k miles one owner with all maintence records. An its the best purchase i have made in a long time. With gas prices like they are 58+ mpg is awesome.
Plus the s to sm conversion is easy and cheap.
