Default Timing belt change, now car @ WOT when started

My brother and i just finished changing the headgasket water pump and tining belt on my wifes 95 integra ls auto. we buttoned everything up turned the car on and it started right up.

as soon as it started the RPM started climbing and would not idle. in fact it was as if the car was stuck @ WOT. it jumped up to 4-5 grand before we shut the car off.

we tried loosening the distributor, and adjusting the idle screw on the throttle body as well as loosening the throttle and cruise control cables.

i'm stumped and all my searches are failing.

any ideas?

my brother's dad is a mechanic and he said the same thing about the vacum leaks. i've looked for all the hoses and i'm pretty sure they have been connected. i'm going to see if i find a diagram with all the vacum hoses and check them all one by one.

you can spray liquid on vacuum lines to see if theres a leak...
i doubt timing would cause rpm to rise steadily...
make sure pcv is connected well on valve cover if it's a ls, basically check everything you modified since start of maintenance repair...=backtrack

Check your mechanical timing, is it in TDC? Then check your ignition timing. After that, check see if you reverse your wiring..ie IAC valve, TPS, and MAP sensor plug in. Did you bleed the air out of your coolant system? Spray brake or carb cleaner around the intake manifold, you might have a leak there if you took out the IM also. Good Luck!!

if its leakin that bad to cause the rpms to steadily climb, chances are its gonna be the throttle body gasket or the im gasket, or u have a nipple on your im that has no hose connected to it

thank you for all the replies. i will be following your advice and test the hoses for leaks, check the pvc valve etc.

i have a feeling its the Intake manifold so i'll be removing it if all else fails and double checking everything.
