Default turbo leak help-brand new garrett

sup guys, im currently putting together my first turbo setup - garrett 57 trim, after initial install i noticed a small amount of oil seeping out the turbine bolts-centersection area. its a very small amount 2-3 drops after vehicle warm up, but due to it being a brand new turbo wasnt sure if this was normal or not. i noticed this during 2 warm up cycles- vehicle idling light revs to maybe 1500rpm. at first thought bad drain setup so i switched it and still the same issue

is something wrong or am i paranoid. please take a look at my pics {hard to see oil} and give me some advice. planned on going for an exhaust fab and tune soon and this is the last thing i need to go wrong if you know what i mean.

thanks

oil setup
aem gauge/ showing about 35-40 psi after warm up- from sanwich plate
-3 feed with .065 restrictor teed from stock pressure port
1/2'' drain

I have seen it many turbos. Maybe some kind of assembly grease or oil that seeps out there.

so you would consider this typical or no. i mean i havent put any miles on it so i guess i dont techbically know how bad it is. all it has is idle time

I have HEARD that newer turbos sometimes do it, and some of them stop and some of them dont.

Give it a few more cylces and re-tighten the clocking bolts.

it is actually very common. I put my setup together last week. Today i noticed the same thing. very small amount of oil. My friends turbo had the same thing. What you can do is put a little bit of jb weld around the fitting. Should stop it.

:sigh:

I always seem to hear this about Garrett turbos. My super 60 did the same thing...it didnt cause any detrimental damage, but i noticed the more miles i put on, the more oil buildup was being seen in the compressor wheel Im not sure what it's from either...

I have a gt28r turbo and it was brand new and it leaked also. i found some oil where the intake outlet connects to the turbo. also found oil in back of the turbo where the 5 bolts bolt up. Is that normal? mine also did the same thing. I thought i blew a seal or something...Is this common????

if you're running a restrictor, it shouldn't be happening. I never had that happen with a brand new gt28r.

2 customers just bought t3/60-1's at around the same time. The first guy has symptoms just like the OP in this thread. He tried to retighten the turbo, use sealant, etc..etc.- no dice. He will be sending it back to get it checked out. We installed the other t3/60-1 in an rsx which has upgraded from a t3/4 57 trim(that had no issues, leaks, or smoking) and within about 2 hours of run time it starting pissing oil into the hot side/downpipe. We are currently dealing with the warranty situations. I never recalled having problems with any Garett's like this before. Does anyone know of any changes in manufacturing or quality control?

I thought the GT series turbos came out of the factory w/ a built in oil restrictor? Can someone verify?

no.

this is why http://www.atpturbo.com sells restrictors for GT turbos

I had heard that rumor before but it's not true.

I have the exact same turbo you do and mine did the same thing in the same spot when i gave the car a few heat cycles. After about 4 heat cycles of 30 min long or so the leak just stopped completely. I also heard it's a very common thing. Seals need to seat themselves. Just try tightening up the clocking bolts and the CHRA bolts and see if it stops

I knew ATP sells restrictors, I just wasnt sure if it came w/ the turbo or not

Thanks for clarifying though.

There are many possibilities here.

1) 57 trims, and other journal bearing turbos of that size using a -3AN line from the back of the block, does not need a restrictor typically. There has been much debate about these about honda, and unless there are some changes in oil setup of the turbo setup, this isn't needed

2) Could also be backed up from the way the return line was bent. too far of an angle can cause a bit of oil back up.

3) Some lubrication that is needed on the shaft that comes from the Garrett facility may inadvertantly have spilled into that passage, and it is rather normal.

Check the bolts on the turbine housing as well as your return line to make sure.
