Default Cam gear setting for stock timing

I have a question about the timing and setting for the cam gears. I've turned the crank until the number 1 piston is at TDC but I'm unsure of how the cam gears should go. Should the "Up" indicators be going straight up or should they being going in a generally up direction with the notches on the gears lining up all the way across? I hope that's a clear as it sounds to me. Any help at this point would be great.
