Default Question about setting TDC on new cam gears

Asking for a friend of mine:

Ok, he got the new STR cam gears with the goofy timing marks on them. He's putting them on his stock B16 cams. He needs help locating TDC because he is assembling the motor and just put the cams in, so he doesn't really know off the top of his head where TDC is exactly. There are several marks, of course, on the cam gears, but there is only on mark enscribed on the bronze inner portion of the cam gear. Any help is greatly appreciated!

TIA

he should get the motor all put together with the stock cam gear on it,
after you know it is timed right, swap the cam gears.

this way you know for sure that it is right

Take the stock cam gear and lay the STR over it. That way you can line up the keyway and timing marks on them. If need be, you can make a timing mark on the STR if there isn't one there.

I agree, just compare the 2 gears.

I may be misunderstanding the topic, but you can only put them on the cam one way, because of the key. Then you should be able to line up the two marks on the insides of the cams. You can just hold the old cams up to the new ones and line up the keyed position, then find the corresponding lines.

Default TDC

can't u just set the cam to TDC by lining up the two guide holes. There's a small hole in each cam that when turned to TDC will line up with a hole in the oil supply rail (long flat alum piece that bolts over the cam caps). You can use a small allen head to hold it in place. Once you have it lined up that way, you can look and see what STR is using for TDC on the cam gear.

I always use the pin method when setting the cams. If using the up marks on cams it could throw you off a tooth. When setting the cams in my son's ls/Vtec that we just completed with the pin set for the exhaust cam the up mark was at 12oclock while the intake with the pin set the up mark was almost pointing at 11 oclock (GSR cams) I kept it here and she fired right up and was able to set the timing. Few days later I installed the BuddyClub Gears.
