right now i have my pioneer deck installed where my stock radio was, but when i go turbo, i think i want to put gauges in that spot and relocate my cd player behind the cup holder. i'm almost positive i tried to do this once before but the deck woudlnt fit in that slot ... how do people do it?? do i need a smaller deck?
In order to put the deck in the lower slot you need to have the cup holder setup with the flip up cover, not the one with the open cup holders and storage bin. If you have the one with the flip up cover on the cup holders all you have to do is remove the storage bin, it secured with screws, and move the radio plug from the top down to the lower level plug it into the CD deck and slide the deck into the slot. If you want you can secure the deck with screws on the sides if you take apart the center console to gain access to the metal frame. Not sure if there's another way to do it this is just the way I had it in my civic.
i had to shave a little bit of plastic to get the "cage" in there then the radio slid right into the "cage" like it normally would. no screws or anything and the deck doesnt move at all. i took the door off of my cup holders too just so i can use them without interfering with the radio.
I just swapped my 00 si out to the 96-98 cup holders for the exact reason you stated.
thought I was the only one haha. But I didn't even use the "cage" for the CD player. I just used the screws that held the tray in and bolted my stereo straight in.
Works great and looks super clean.

i had to tuck the wires up and zip tie them out of the way too so they didn't hang on the sides. it took a whole 3 mins i think to do it. actually it took me longer to soder the wiring harness together than it did to put it in.

I run mine in the trunk - outta site - outta mind!
No reason to look at all that audio clutter, IMHO... I just wanna listen to it!

im pretty sure they are talking about the headunit part, not the changer part...
but im sure they appreciate your enthusiasm
i was thinking about doing this, but would it be awkward to reach for?

Yeah, I know, but he was asking what other ppl do...
Personally, I run a factory head unit, if you will, e.g. the OEM radio/alarm system - with a factory 6-Disc changer and factory trunk mount.
All that stuff is dirt-cheap on eBay - and mounting it in the trunk keeps it out of eye-sight of thieves...
Anyway, gauges are fine - but if it was me - I wouldn't hack up the dashboard area and load it with a bunch of audio cruft!
That's what the trunk is for, yes?

thats exactly what I did.
thats exactly what I did.
there's already a metal frame in the bottom part, when you take out the compartment.
My radio (kenwood) had threaded holes in the sides of the radio, exactly on the places where the frame has holes.
It bolted right in there..
The most time consuming part is taking out the middle compartments.

any pictures of the finished product?

all you need is the 96-98 cup holder.... and everything fit fine for me.....jus get your self the block off plate... little hint, take the cover off the cup holder, when i flip mine up to place in a cup the cover hits the cd player **** and switches stations......
I have the lid on mine still and it doesn't change channels. It probably depends on the radio.
Remove the shift ****.
Remove the armrest / armrest delete.
Remove the console that goes over the shifter and around the cup holder.
Remove the cup holder from the dash.
Take the new cup holder and insert the CD player.
Bolt the CD player in.
Plug the radio in.
Input code (if needed) and check that everything operates correctly.
Install the new cup holder into the dash.
Install the console, shift **** and armrest.
haha you dont have to shave anything.. you will be using the din from the 96-98 civics
1. take off center console and cupholder/96-98 din
2. unscrew the pocket din on the cupholder (2-4 screws)
3. take the aftermarket radio and slide it in until the premade holes are lined up. (metal slide bracket is not needed!!!)
4. use the screw provided with the radio as these are shorter and will prevent any damage to your radio.
5. pull the harness from the oem radio down so that your radio harness can be plugged in jugding that your harness is ready to be plugged in.
6. replace cupholder, center console, armrest
putting it in this way makes it harder for those quick thieves to steal your radio bc its impossible to slide it out being that they are held by the screws mounted on the side of the cupholder. if the radio is in to much then you will have a hard time getting the detachable face off and you will not be able to mount the radio trim around it. if it is out to much then the cupholder lid hits your radio face and you may no longer use your cupholder. depending on your model of radio and the size of your buttons/face you may or maynot have a nicely fit radio..
depending on which holes you've chose on the radio to be mounted will determine how much it sits out or in from the console.

I don't think the actual console plastic part is different from 96-98 to 99-00. But could be. Check junk yards.
