Default Rear swaybar on DX. Post your factory swaybar sizes?

I recently went to the junkyard and purchased/installed a factory rear swaybar that came off of a 89-91 civic hatch. I thought all EF rear sway bars were the same but mine is smaller?

According to the FAQ, the only rear sway bar made from factory for the EF was 15mm but this rear sway is smaller than 15mm, more like 13mm.

Was there an EF that used a 13mm rear sway?
What car do you think the sway bar is from?
Anyone ever see a 13mm bar on an EF?

Thanks

I just measured the bar with my micrometer and it measures 0.515 inches which is 13mm.

I was under the impression that the STD/DX were identical in the fact that neither was equipped with a rear swaybar??? Perhaps this is true.

here are some pics of my install

Si is the only EF that came with a rear swaybar.

DA rear swaybars work, and are smaller at 14.7mm.

look on the side of the rear swaybar bushing. there should be a number embossed on it. thats the real size.

There are no numbers on the factory bushings. I actually bought energy suspension bushings and they are 15mm but the bar is smaller.

Besides i measured with a micrometer, and im sure the bar is 13mm. I guess there was more than one kind of bar made for the EF.

The other thing that I had noticed was the way it's mounted. Why is it mounted like that (holes through the trunk)? There are OEM mounting points underneath the car so why mount it like you did?

he did that because he doesnt have a Si chassis. only Si chassis had the threaded holes for the swaybar mount. thats just one of the ways to get the swaybar to fit a non Si chassis.

Timeout, my car is a 91 STD and it has the holes threaded. I used them for the mounting brackets (stock Si sway bar setup with all appropriate hardware from the yards) without any issue....

for some reason, some odd cars have come out of the factory with threaded holes. its not typical for a non Si chassis.

Now I'm gonna start checking cars at the yards to see if the holes are threaded LOL Back on topic, for the sake of arguement I'll measure my sway bar later with a digital micrometer.

ive also seen 3dr civics made in japan. some ppl think they were only imported to the US from canada.

consider yourself lucky if it has the threaded holes. most just have blind holes.

the diameter should match whats embossed on the side of the stock bushing in the rears. the fronts are labelled with letters.

I'll check to verify it matches that bushing

I checked...

There was no number on either bushing end but I did have a 90-93 Integra rear sway handy so I checked that bar's bushing and it did in fact have a 15 on there. I measured the bar since I had the tool out already and it came in slightly above 15mm just like the Civic Si one was slightly over 13mm (that .16 is easily attributed to the original finish combined with dirt/grime and silver overspray). I actually snapped a pic of the car I pulled the sway bar from last summer at the yards. The only way I could tell for certain that this particular bar was from this particular Civic Si is because of the matching paint that left overspray on some parts of the car, one being the sway bar.

hmmm, all this time i thought civic and CRX rear swaybars were the same.

guess theyre not.

civic si
52300-SH3-010

crx si
52300-SH3-900

my apologies for the previously wrong info.

i recommend changing that 13 for a 15 then.

So I wonder why it was designed with the Civic bar to be thinner than the CRX. I would've guess it would be at least the same if not thicker than the CRX since it's a slightly bigger car. Oh well, I guess I'll be mounting the Integra sway bar I have LOL.

The one on my 89 hatchback is from a CRX Si.

Edit: Rear LCAs too. my stock ones were not threaded.

only SI hatches and CRX Si have rear sways, none other did (not speaking of sedans as i am unsure about them)

MOST non-SI 90-91 hatches, regardless of trim level, come with tapped mounting points on the chassis

very few non-Si 88-89 hatches came with the tapped mounting holes in the chassis

only Si models have the correct rear control arms for the end links to bolt to

it is my understanding that all CRX's came with chassis mounting points but once again only the Si crx had the proper control arms

IMO the best method for mounting a sway on a car without proper threaded holes is to weld a 1/2" plate(under the car) where the holes would be with the proper size holes tapped to accept the factory bolts.

Do 90-91 crx dx's come with tapped mounting points?

i would disagree, i was say most dont have threaded holes. but thats just my experience. i havent taken count...

you just have to check... and check for threads. the hole will be there, but it may not be threaded.

got a DX with hole but no tread and no LCA end link holder too!

pass the bolt into the frame (a good job to do) to install SB braket.....but don't forget ..SI came whit reinfort inside the frame where the braket holding in place...DX does'ent so i f you go more than 15mm I suggest suspenssion technique braket holder that bolt direct from the toe hook for better secure!
