Default oil change question

HELP!!!! i have a 2001 civic , auto/ with 143000 miles on it, just got it, gift from my bro in IRAQ, well i don't know what type of oil he used to put on it but in autozone they told me that 10-40 would be good cause of the miles on the vehicle, so i ended up putting castrol gtx 10-40??? is that ok, or give me your opinion anybody of your experience, thank you to whoever helps/

10w-30, 5w-30, or 10w-40 is what I would consider "acceptable" oil weights.

recommended by honda on stock civics in 10w-30 or 5w-30, not sure which one, i use 10w-30 though</TD></TR></TABLE>

Don't post guesses. Don't send somebody down the wrong path with incorrect information, just because you are bored and feel like posting... and do you honestly think a cars body style ( "an accord" ) has anything to do with the viscosity of motor oil that it requires?!

Search for the actual factory recommendation for oil and stick with that.

The cap says 5w 20.... but there are plenty of people using different oils for different reasons. Run a search and see what you think is best for your car.

I've always put 5 20 in mine. I have more miles than you too. I might upgrade to something slightly more weighted, because I have so many miles.
I need to change my oil, also. Thanks for reminding me!

I myself love the Mobil 1 Synthetics and would never imagine using a heavier oil than necessary especially in these days of high fuel costs. Mobil has a website where you can put in your vehicle and it will make recommendations. For a 2001 Civic with over 140k it recommended these oils:

Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5W-20
Mobil 1 5W-20
Mobil 1 0W-20 Advanced Fuel Economy

Personally I would use the 0W-20, it really is a great product and is what I use in my Civic.
