Extending Battery Cables / Battery
94 Honda Accord
- My car got [freak]ed by my girlfriend and the battery died.
i want to get a Optima Yellow Top but the terminals are on the wrong side.
(No i cant simply turn the battery around)
i need to either replace the whole harness or extend it..
i know extending isn't a very good idea..
but how do i replace it all?
i know where they run .. the positive goes to 3 places and the negative to 2 places but how do i do that when all i see at the stores is one terminal to one spot? not 3?
any ideas?

Well this is what I was told. You can use any 4 gauge cable for this job. Generally audio power wire, some quality stuff and you should be fine. I dont see the detriment in extending it a foot or so. I would probably recommend using ones with two different colors to differentiate between positive and negative.
I recommend this to you because this is what was recommended to me by other users here on H-T.

I've never actually done it on a car "yet" but you could buy roll of 0, 2 or 4 AWG wire, and the appropriate sized end connectors. Then by using a soldering iron, some solder and electrical tape you could add the extra ends onto a single wire. Just lay out the wire and see where you would need to T splice into the main and bob is your uncle. If you know how to do a T splice that is.
Or you could cut the existing wire 5" from the terminal. Measure how much wire you would need for it to reach the post. Then using two butt splices, or solder and shrink wrap, add the length of wire in the middle.

i dont think extending would be a good idea o.O right? ... i dont think it would be hard to redue the whole harness but how would i connect 4 wires together? ...

extending it would be just find as long as u make a good connection. my hot wire is extended all the way to my trunk and it works just fine. if you are just gonna add 5 or so inches then cut the connector off and add in the wire no big deal. just make sure u have good connection and splices on everything.

anyways... i found a way...
what i did was:
- take off old harness..
- buy sears pre-made 4gauge wires and used those
- bought sears terminals
- bought D34M Blue Optima
- put everything together
what i COULD have done:
- buy battery
- if you look at the OEM harness toward the right of the car (when you standing in front of it) you will notice that it is tight down next to the battery. if you only remove that and move the wires over ..
- you can buy a battery that has the terminals / posts on the wrong side like the optima does .. just turn the battery around.. (having the postive where it used to be but to the left now) (look at picture)

terminals are where they should... but moved over to the left (Original is Right side)

i know i got a dirty engine but w/e i rather leave it alone than mess it up by trying to wash it..
and i forgot to mention that. i would have replaced all the wiring anyways because the old battery messed up everything..

blah.. i mean. you dont have to remove the harness and just release it from its holders and move it over and it should reach.. i didn't try it cuz i just went ahead and took it off... so you guys can try it out if youd like
yeah.. you dont have to extend them..
just remove them from their holders so you can move them around more.
i wanted to replace them either way because they were corroded.
yea.. its the marine blue top optima D34M
(deep cycle)(size 34)(marine)
the yellow top D34 is the exact same battery in specs but its not a marine and it has the extra posts on the side of the battery not the top..
Cheapest place to get
Sams Club: Yellow Top 160ish

Nice job mate! The guy at the battery store told me I could not install a blue top and made me buy a yellow one. Damn. The Sears battery terminal allow you to attach how many cables?
its suppose to be for one cable.. if you actually use it the right way but i used it differently.. go take a look at them
the yellow top doesn't fit either o.O.. as in the location of the terminals
if you got the D34/78 or something like that, its the same thing.. check the optima website.. the specs for the D34/78.. D34M.. and D34 are the same but for the D34 it doesn't have the extra posts.

I hear u. The thing I like about the blue top is the extra posts bc I am installing an new sound system with 3 amplifiers.
BTW what is holding your battery down? Dont u have a tie down rod????

The optima yellow top also has holes on the side of the battery for one positive and one negative post. Can I put posts in these and run power from it for my amps and still use the orginals posts on the top of the battery for the rest of the electrical? If so what kind of posts do I get? Booya-skee-daddy!
I've had 3 friends with Yellow Tops and they hated them. Died beyond charging within 6 months. Yellow tops are more of an "accessory" battery due to being a deep cycle. I would recommend a Red Top for just cranking the car and such... Just giving you guys a heads up.
