If you used a less abrasive media, like baking soda, you could blast those wheels. With sand, you're going to pit the metal.

false, i use 70 Grit Aluminum Oxide and doesn't pit the metal at all, and i've done several wheels... it's the coarser grit that causes it... to answer the OP, yes. sandblast then coat them.

I've destroyed a set of alloys using standard sandbox sand, so I wouldn't say my recommendation is false.

will bakin soda work with a cheap blaster? $60 craftsman from sears. all you have to do is shove the hose in the bucket and spray

I don't think they use sand for blasting anymore. I think they call it "media blasting" now, and they use less abrasive stuff to do the blasting.

The toughest part is going to be finding an oven large enough to hold the wheel after you have done the powdercoating. The media blasting and powder coating itself should not be a problem.

If I were you I would probably pay a professional to do the whole job for you. The amount of money you will spend for the media blasting and powdercoating equipment will probably cost more than the cost of having it professionally done.

It can be tough to find a skilled powder coater. You have to ask around and see if anyone knows anyone in your area that they recommend.
