Valve adjustment?
Hi all. Just recently redid the top end on My H23. Running KMS dual Race Springs and Chromoly Retainers with Crower Turbo Cams. New stock Size valve on intake and exhaust. There is alot of valve chater when you first start the engine up untill it warms up then the noise seems to be normal. We have adjusted them 3 different time now and doesnt seem to change anything at all. Anyone else running into this or am I just overlooking something. Any help would be appreciated.
well used the specs that came with the cams its .006 and .008. cant remeber witch is the intake or exhaust spec. A friend of mine that has been building honda engine for boost for a while readjusted them for me again.
i'm running those clearances on stock cams. i used the helms for the specs (h23) and put them on the tight side. i thought .007"IN was the F22 engine specs. maybe i should double check.

use the cam spec cards recommendation.
also, is there are a reason you decided to run KMS valvetrain and not the appropriate crower valvetrain?
if you are getting valve chatter, then the specs are too loose.

+1. Thats the best time to adjust valves.

it is absolutely required that it be dead cold when you adjust the valve lash. As soon as the engine is warmed at all, the metal expands and reduces the clearances. So if it is set to proper spec when the engine is warm, they will be much too loose when cold. Heat expansion is the only reason we have to adjust the valves to the specified clearance, if metal never expanded, we could run basically no clearance without a valve sticking open
Yes we did set the clearances when the engine was cold and yes we did use the specs that came with the cams. everything was adjusted before the car was even started. We set the clearances alittle tighter than normal. The reason on the KMS springs and retainers was just trying to stay in my budget area.

This sounds like piston slap. Valve lash actually increases as the head warms up.

I'm sorry but I have to disagree. I've never seen valve lash clearance increases when the engine is warmed up. It has always been my experience that the clearance gets tighter when the engine is warmed up.

Different rates of expansion for the valves and the rockers?

he never said anything about running different valves, just the springs and retainers. if all is within spec, call it a day. just hope you picked a good combo.
