Default 92 Accord Bad Fuel Economy?

My uncle bought a 92 Accord EX 4 Door recently and it's got the F22A6 and it's an auto. The problem is is that he's only getting about 18 MPG consistantly. He bought the car for the fuel economy and it's not very economical. We replaced the O2 sensor, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, exhaust, fuel filter, air filter, and still nothing but a very slight improvement. There is no CEL and the car runs smooth as can be. It's got tons of power and drives great. But gets terrible gas mileage. Does anyone know what I can do, it's his first Honda and he's already talking about not buying another one. BTW, the car's got less than 100,000 miles on it and is in excellent condition.

That gas mileage is normal for that setup. If you want more gas mileage and power, I suggest pulling a P06 ECU out of a 1993 Civic LX, tuning it, and using that in the Accord. Easy 5 to 10 horsepower, and you'd probably see 32mpg highway.

What do you mean by tuning it? You mean chipping it for use with the 2.2L? Or is it basically a direct drop in? I happen to have a P06 in my basement but it's for a manual trans.

18 mpg is not normal for a stock 92 Accord. I have three 90-93 Accords and all of them average 25 or better for mixed driving, 30+ on the highway. Along with everything you've changed, did you check the compression? timing? Does the transmission shift to overdrive? Does the torque converter lock up properly? Brakes dragging? Make sure tire pressure is good.

Agreed, I get 33-35 MPG out of my 92 and it has 341,000 miles on it. Granted, I have a manual, but that should only be good for a couple more MPG.

That is interesting, I have a 93 and get 27-28mpg highway. I thought that I would get in the 30s'. I have owned it for about 4 months and have changed the trans fluid, plugs, wires, distributor, button etc.

I am also getting around 22 mpg. You say I can just replace the ECU without any modifications or adverse side effects?

Hello, I have the same issue. How did you make out? did you change the ECU?

Thanks Joe
