Default Skunk2 N-1 by RS*R,,, Constructive opinions please...

I contacted Skunk 2 after takng a gander at their N-1 by RS-R invidia. It is a very nice looking setup, nice welds just a well made looking catback. The Cunstomer service representitive answered most of my questions pretty well without stumble. It is a 60mm OD catback. According to him it "Does NOT have a Bottle neck," and is a true 60mm through.

I am very aware of what I am looking for and what diameter I need, 60mm being just fine for my current "Near Stock setup." I am mearly looking to complete the I/H&E with a well designed system. I am still considering 2 other systems, this one however seems to fill the bill. Unfortunately it is an N-1 style and that means LOUDER!!! Well obviously anything will be louder than stock but, according to the Skunk2 Rep. their N-1 is Much quieter than the Apexi AND the Thermal R&D, Got that? AND the Thermal which IMHO is not nearly as annoying as the Apexi.

So, Now I am again in a quandry. I need something to finish this project and, by the fall since that is when I plan to retune on the dyno. And I plan on running Limerock but, they have a noise DB limitation, so I need a well designed system that is fairly quiet. This looks like a good deal AND it Includes a silencer WITH the catback, Not as an add on Extra purchase, So it may just be the one for me.

Heres a few links and PIC's to look over, take a look and see what you guys think:

http://www.skunk2.com/
it is on sale but, not in stock and it's stock number from Skunk2 is 413-05-1530 The S-2 rep I spoke to suggested the following link site for a good deal but, also said it is not in stock yet for the R.

http://www.inlinefour.com/skunracexsys.html
the best price I found was $500. from inlinefour.com But, their site does Not list it for the DC2R

Does this PIC of their weld look like it necks down or bottlenecks to you?

The included Silencer

Lemme know what you guys think, And remember that it took me more than 4 months to decide on an intake and over 6 months for a header/cat combo, So I don't just jump into this stuff. Unfortunately the Dynos on Skunk 2's site are NOT for an ITR.

Thanks for any helpful productive responses in advance, Oh and YES thanks, I already SEARCHED...

I have the Skunk2 Exhuast. I purchased it last year arond this time. At the time no one near me had it and the shop didnt even sell any yet, except to me. It doesnt have a bottle neck at the cat. It is 60mm all thru out the whole system. The welds and piping are very nice.

It is not very loud like most people think. My freind has an Apex N1 and it is alot louder compared to my car with the Skunk2 system. We both also have JDM 4-1 headers and testpipes. I used to run a carsound cat and it was really quiet. If you have a cat you will probably like the sound. It also has better ground clearance than the Apex N1.

i like the skunk2 exhaust it is of very high quality and makes power. The only problem i had with it is how loud it was.

Thank you very much for the clear response.

Do You have any dyno sheets/comparisons?

Thanks again,

How loud was it?
Louder than the Greddy EVO?
Louder than the Thermal R&D?
Thanks,
A.

i think its really loud...my friend who i sold my type-r to bought it, with the stock header and cat its really loud, its not a raspy or high pitched sound, its a nice very deep sound ..and it seems louder at lower RPMs

these looked very appealing to me as well, but no one seemed to have tried them.

60mm = 2.36inches >>> it's not 2.5" but I'd have to do some more reading (MD's articles) to see what kind of effect it has. it's larger than stock so it should be a good improvement.

Correct!

In fact, the size is correct for me now with Stock motor AND for when I do cams down the road.

I have the Orginal RSR EX MAG GTII that goes under the tank. Since this setup is very straight and does not have a resonator you will see good gains in the mid and high ranges. I have been using my this setup Turbo GSR for 8 months but I will be upgrading to a 76mm exhaust soon. With the silencer installed RSR exhaust is bearable but remove the silencer and you will **** off a lot of people and maybe damage you ears after prolonged exposure.

I have it right now and its loud, well I have high compression and JUN III, I definitly felt the gains from this exhaust. It is a nice exhaust stainless from the catback. Is 60mm 2.5 inches?

Thanks guys,

the one I am referring to is the "Mega Power..."

Not sure if the ones you are listing is the same one.

Oh and 60mm is slightly smaller than 2 1/2"...

But, my header is 60mm and my cat is a 2 1/2" so the 60mm catback with mandrel bent pipes, no bottlenecks and N-1 style free flowing cannister mated to my Stock motor and I think I'll be set till the next step, And I'll still be good for when I go with B's.

It's a plan, and now All I'm doin is finishing up one part.

Thanks again,

A.

the only thing that is bugging me about it...

I'd like to go with some cams (like the Toda B's or Skunk Stage2's or JunIII's), and then up the compression later maybe (similar to you). The gains of going with the 2.5" collector + cat are clearly noticable. If you add on a slightly smaller exhaust that will be a "bottleneck" ... however could it not also cause an increase in velocity? Also, the gases will have cooled slightly following the cat, so they will be slightly more compressable.

As for resonators, in doing my reading apparently Hytech gained 2hp (which one could possibly throw out...) adding a resonator, and yet resonators change the diameter of the piping slightly.

Bottom line for the price it's the best exhaust going

60mm = 2.363"

most other companies go slightly bigger with 60.5mm which is 2.38" (ie. Mugen)

I would recommend this exhaust to anyone. It's probably the best sounding, with gains you can feel.

Is there really much of a difference between the half polished and full polished? Is it even worth the extra to get the full polish, or is it just a waste of $$?

there shouldn't be any difference. heck, the unpolished should flow a little better.

Really? That works well, cuz the half-polished is cheaper too, and everyone always loves that

If you have a more free flowing exhaust (larger piping header and cat/test pipe) the addition of the Skunk2/N1 exhaust will be a lot quieter compared to the stock header and cat and the skunk2/N1 exhaust.

After All BOOST OWNZ!!!

And I want the Jetski too, H'mm which to choose?

What if I put a jetski motor on my car? Ya know like something from Monster Garage? Lemme call Jesse and see what he could do for me.

See ya tomorrow,,,,

A.

Thanks for tryin to help Smeister, I already know all that But, nothing changes the fact that ANY N-1 style muffler is Louder than stock and most oval shaped cannisters regardless of header and cat diameter. And my header and cat are 60mm and 2 1/2" currently and made the stock setup louder and raspier, NOT quieter. I had just heard good stuff about the S-2 and wondered Just how loud it was DB wise and how much if any performance it would provide. I was also really kinda lookin for Dyno charts.

PPS Thanks to every one else that shared their opinion constructively. And Rodney...
