Lot of things going between yesterday and today...need to vent a little.
Well, yesterday I call a riding buddy of mine that I had some time without talking to, because it seemed like he dissapeared from the world. He never got online anymore, he didn't answer my SMS nor my phone calls. I was worried but finally yesterday I could talk to him and he tells me he got his bike (A blue 06 R1, it's the same that appears in some pics of my bike) stolen at a light in here. A couple thugs jumped on him and then one pulled a gun, so he ran away while the thugs tried to shoot him (Luckily he escaped unharmed).
Then, after I was returning from college at night I was lane sharing (Traffic is horrible in here) on the highway...then I saw a hole between an old F150 and a car (didn't get to see which model it was) and since I had to change lanes to get to my exit, I proceeded to slip between the F150 and the car...but then suddendly, the guy on the car gets on the throttle, I inmediately lean the bike to the other side as in a evasive manouver...but then the F150 slams on the brakes...I see that I'm going to crash with the F150 bumper just in the right corner...and since the lane right next to that one was filled with cars, I couldn't escape...
So I grabbed too much front brake...and got to taste a little asphalt. I got up, picked up my bike, started it and just bolted out of there. In here, it's kinda dangerous to stick around much time with your bike, a couple other bike messengers stopped to ask if I was ok, I said yes but since I had the memory of my friends R1 getting stolen by a couple of thugs on a chinese bike, I didn't want to be stuck in the middle of a busy highway checking things out with a bunch of shady looking bikers.
Luckily, neither my bike nor I suffered any damage...I was wearing my leather jacket, gloves, lid and boots...I slided a little on my right side and the gear did it's job, no marks of anything on it. My knee hit the ground and got a little rash on it...nothing too big, I got even worse rash when I was a kid on my bicycle. The pants I was wearing didn't even rip apart.
Now the worse part...I got up this morning, and when I check my MSN messenger I see a message from one of the guys from the local bike forum..."Man, Guille is dead".
I couldn't believe it. A friend of mine, 22 years old that got his bike just some months ago...dead. He didn't know the details of the accident, but it seems like he was with a passenger and he is dead too.
He was a great person, very humble...but I noticed he had unresolved issues...he was one of those guys that is great to hang out with, but that you don't want to ride with him. Just once I decided to ride with him, just the two of us, and then I said I didn't want to ride with him never again. He was just too reckless on 2 wheels. I tried to counsel him, to make him understand the importance of gear, how not to mix alcohol and bikes, to make him a better rider, etc, etc, etc...I tried to protect him and it seems like I have failed.
May God have his soul in eternal grace. RIP Guillermo.
Sorry for the long rant guys. Be safe out there

**** happens, such is life. Say your piece, and move on.
Some say, when it rains it pours, don't worry. Key thing is how you deal with it, some stir on it, and it ruins them, some live through it, let it go, and move on. Be the better, and the latter.
Honestly, you're a better person to grow up there, I would have bolted out of there ASAP.

The first thing I did after hearing about my friends death was to get on my bike and ride to college. I believe all things happen for a reason, and this was to make me reflect a little on my riding habits, since I'm gaining more experience and confidence, I'm starting to ride a little faster and harder on the street and all of this makes me "humble" again.
I respect the bike, not fear it.
And about the R1...I doubt it will appear ever again. Luckily he had full coverage insurance for her, even though he will have to wait for the insurance company to give him the check, and since our economy is very inconsistent, he will have to fork out more more to buy a similar liter bike. Even though this time he wants a Ninja or Gixxer, because CBR's and R1/R6 are the most stolen sportbikes.
And this is another reason I love nakeds...a drop like mine on a SS and I would be still crying...specially since parts in here cost x4 or even 5 times the cost of the same piece on the US lol.

Good for you. I praise myself for having a great career that dropping my bike isn't a financial burden. I also praise it, so I don't get stuck riding a bike like yours.
but then again, I don't ride like a spode through third world country traffic, and then cry when a car brake checks me.

No need for the third world country remarks, not everybody is lucky enough to be born into a well working society. Hell I was born in the USA and I chose to live here in Venezuela to make a difference, so to you and superiority complex, [freak] off.

Damn terrible sequence of events man, they always say the bad stuff comes in waves of threes.
RIP to your buddy, I know how it feels to lose a buddy so young who has nothing but prosperous life ahead of him

Good thing you were geared up. Can I ask what you were wearing?
Sorry to hear about your friend, I know a kid just like him, nobody will ride with his crazy *** and I'm trying to keep my other friends off 600s just yet.
All my friends are getting sport bikes and I'm building my own little gang. My closest friends are riding with me and stories like this as well as the advice you guys give here is priceless. I have my buddy on a new 08 ninja- awesome bike, thanks for the positive 250 reinforcement around here. I almost want one =p almost!
The seriousness about gear and MSF around here is also kick ***. I manage to take it all in and swear by my gear. My friends think I'm crazy going for Sidis, an RX7, and full gauntlets and icon jacket. Their "I'm riding with my shirt off" is turning more and more into hey I might want to get some real gear , Pat is right.
Thanks for sharing and RIP bro.

Sorry to hear about your very bad times Leonardo... seems we all taste the asphalt at one time or another some for better and some for worse. Your friend may not have been at fault, but ultimately we are all resposible for our actions, and even the actions of others at times. Take care of yourself, we all like having you around
Sorry to hear about all this Leo. I have friends that seem to have a hard time riding responsibly as well. I almost lost one of them last summer. I think he has calmed down a little since then, but my other friend that witnessed it still doesn't want to ride with him. He still gets goosebumps when he tells the story of that day.
Leo, I'm so sorry to hear this.
I can't begin to say how sorry I feel about all of this. Such a tragic waste ugh
Just happy to hear you are ok at least. You can't blame yourself on it, you did everything you could to help him.
sucky stuff for sure. Hit me up if you need to talk ever.
